Goodreads Is Now on the First Generation Kindle Paperwhite
“We want Goodreads on the original Kindle Paperwhite, too!" was the cri du coeur in November when we first launched Goodreads on the new Kindle Paperwhite. For all of you who asked, your time is now!
Starting today, Goodreads on Kindle is available on both models of Kindle Paperwhite in the United States, Canada, and Australia. This is part of our ongoing commitment to bring Goodreads to you on all your favorite devices.
Goodreads on Kindle will be made available in a free and automatic over-the-air upgrade to the first generation Kindle Paperwhite in the coming weeks. How will you know when you have it? You’ll see the Goodreads “g” on the top right-hand side of the menu bar.

We currently offer Goodreads on Kindle only in the United States, Canada, and Australia (on all models of Kindle Paperwhite and also on the new Kindle Fires). We don’t have anything more to announce at this moment, but our goal is to provide the Goodreads on Kindle experience to as many of our members as possible.
In the meantime, you can also use Goodreads on our iPhone/iPad app or our Android app, available from the Amazon Appstore for Android or from here.
Will you be introducing Goodreads on Kindle to the older Kindle devices with keyboards?
We don’t have any concrete plans to share about this right now, but see our answer to the question above.
I can’t see the “g” on my screen. What’s happening?
Goodreads on Kindle will be coming in a free and automatic over-the-air upgrade to the first model of Kindle Paperwhite over the coming weeks. If you can’t wait that long, you can manually download the software and transfer the update to your device via a USB cable. You can find instructions for that here.
Also, don’t forget to reboot once you have the upgrade!

I'm from Portugal, and I just went to my Amazon account, and downloaded the update. I made the update manually and is just perfect. The "g" appeared after the update, as well as a lot of other new cool stuff to my Kindle Paperwhite.... loved it.

Why can't we update progress from the Kindle? I thought that would be an obvious feature.
Progress update, as Andrew pointed out, seems like an obvious feature to me. Perhaps next version?Also, when I start reading a book, I would love to see the option to change the status to "currently reading" ... perhaps a prompt that does this automatically, if user chooses to do so. Similarly, marking the book as read when finished.

I also agree with Craig, Bob and twelvejan.... as soon as I knew that goodreads is going to be bought by amazon I was thinking about the integration between the books I read and goodreads. I will love to have the possibility to update to goodreads my progress in my kindle as soon as I turn on the wi fi option. I mean I recognize that to have the app inside the kindle is progress I hope in the future we see more relations like this one.About the comments with the Cobo and nook and other e readers I guess is going to be more complicated since now goodreads is part of Amazon, and this integration can be more difficult

Need progress update!!! Main feature i dont like about this along with only leave stars and no written feedback when you finish book.

It would be great if Amazon could get the update in the UK too. I got so excited until I read that it wasn't available in the UK yet. We always have to wait for everything even longer.
As the owner of a brand new Kindle Paperwhite, I am thrilled to see the collaboration with Goodreads.com!
First, yes, thank you Goodreads team for the hardwork and bringing this to our first gen PW! I do love having GR on my Kindle plus all the other new features Amazon added (they brought back page numbers instead of % or locations), page flipping and scanning.A few observations though, status updates are not 100% pushing through GR when I share highlights/comments. It worked the first time then the other times, it wasn't on my feed although it all went through my Twitter. Then from Twitter there's a goodreads.com/quote.. link that leads back to the site for a quote for the book.
I also agree that we should be able to update the % of reading progress on GR from the Kindle.

It should get deleted automatically, once the system is upgraded. At least that's what happened with my paperwhite. Cheers!

Isn't a major part of Goodreads the idea of "sharing"? What about sharing your reading progress. One of the only reasons that I use Goodreads. Then, why isn't that feature available? Why do I still have to go to the website or open the Goodreads app on my phone to update my position when I should be able to do it from the Kindle?
Goodreads + kindle = YES PLEASE. Makes organizing my books so much easier.
Considering that Amazon owns Goodreads, I don't think integration with non-Kindle devices will be forthcoming.
I hope goodreads on kindle will soon reach Mexico and Latam!
This MADE MY DAY! I was so sad when goodreads was on the 2nd gen kindle white a few months back. As mine was the 1st generation. Time to go update my firmware <3Ok this may sound idiotic but how do you add books via your kindle? like i love adding book on the to read section for new and upcoming books. I can't seem find the option.
I would love to be able to access Goodreads through my older model Kindle here in the UK... just so you know. :)

The devise would not load a book followed Kobo's advice made it worse whole thing refused to work after that, got money back even though it was out of guarantee as it was bad advice that cused the problem. Then bought a Kobo mini and could not connect to wifi at all. I am back on real books forever now no more ereaders for me..
Everyone I know has a Kindle 4 or older (I've got a 3). I'm not planning to buy a new one any time soon so I guess I won't be seeing it until support for the mass of older Kindles is implemented.

I installed manually with the instructions on Amazon's website and it worked. Very easy to do.
Question: I'm wondering if there is a way to opt out of the update? I see where you said this would be automatic at some point... While I've been waiting patiently for the update to become available, after reading some feedback (on the forums at amazon.com) from several people who did the install about paperwhites becoming slow after installing the goodreads feature, I rather not update at this time. I don't want my paperwhites performance to be hindered by this update. Please advise...thanks
If you dont care about buying books on amazon, you can change the management of your kindle to amazon.com and then you get goodreads-integration (even if you are from germany, france, what ever ..) But buying books does not work anymore, only if you set mastercard/credit-card information on the amazon.com-account (German Lastschriftverfahren or direct debit) does not work here for me (Germany). But Goodreads works well now - but no function for updating my reading progress (realllllly sucks) ---Have fun: https://www.amazon.de/gp/digital/fion... Looks like I'm not getting a kindle sometime soon. I do have the 1st generation kindle and would love to see that app on there! Could you try and do that please?

I beg to differ. Maybe it's just your bad experience with the kobo? Mine still works like a charm... *crossing my fingers that nothing suddenly occurs*
I updated mine manually. I'm from PH. And now I regret doing it. I wish I didn't updated mine. Yes, I've been waiting for the Goodreads integration since it's been in the second generation Kindle PW. BUT. I don't like that I can't even post the books I have finished in Goodreads/Amazon. All because I got the ARC books. Ugh. I'm a reviewer so ARCs are a daily part of my Kindle. But sadly I wished I never updated mine, also because of the Collections was messed up now. If only this will be corrected. Hoping for the best!

I would like to see a function where I can update my reading progress, also I would like to be able to write an actual text review, not just a star rating only. It seems if you want to integrate the two, those are very important functions for users.

I tried the update from amazon.com as well and it didn't work for me either. I really want the update available here in the UK.
I have a UK and US amazon account as I'm from the US but live in the UK now. I updated my software with through my US account and there was the G for goodreads. However, the minute I switched my account back to the UK it was gone :(
UK PLEASE!!!!! I can't fathom why there is a wait for this? What's the reason for not making it available in the UK?
They're probably just still working on getting it to the UK.
