Goodreads Is Now on the First Generation Kindle Paperwhite
“We want Goodreads on the original Kindle Paperwhite, too!" was the cri du coeur in November when we first launched Goodreads on the new Kindle Paperwhite. For all of you who asked, your time is now!
Starting today, Goodreads on Kindle is available on both models of Kindle Paperwhite in the United States, Canada, and Australia. This is part of our ongoing commitment to bring Goodreads to you on all your favorite devices.
Goodreads on Kindle will be made available in a free and automatic over-the-air upgrade to the first generation Kindle Paperwhite in the coming weeks. How will you know when you have it? You’ll see the Goodreads “g” on the top right-hand side of the menu bar.
What can you do now that you have Goodreads on Kindle?
We Know You Have Questions
Will you be introducing Goodreads on Kindle to members in other countries?
We currently offer Goodreads on Kindle only in the United States, Canada, and Australia (on all models of Kindle Paperwhite and also on the new Kindle Fires). We don’t have anything more to announce at this moment, but our goal is to provide the Goodreads on Kindle experience to as many of our members as possible.
In the meantime, you can also use Goodreads on our iPhone/iPad app or our Android app, available from the Amazon Appstore for Android or from here.
Will you be introducing Goodreads on Kindle to the older Kindle devices with keyboards?
We don’t have any concrete plans to share about this right now, but see our answer to the question above.
I can’t see the “g” on my screen. What’s happening?
Goodreads on Kindle will be coming in a free and automatic over-the-air upgrade to the first model of Kindle Paperwhite over the coming weeks. If you can’t wait that long, you can manually download the software and transfer the update to your device via a USB cable. You can find instructions for that here.
Also, don’t forget to reboot once you have the upgrade!
Well, I like what I can do with Goodreads on Kindle Paperwhite so far, but I have some suggestions…
We love to hear feedback! This is our first version, and we’ll be building on this to keep improving the experience. Let us know what you’d like to see in future updates in the comments below.

- See what your Goodreads friends are reading

Could we please get this update for the UK too?! Thanks!

I just got the paperwhite (retiring my keyboard) and am underwhelmed by the goodreads interface. The interface is sooooo much weaker than the mobile app. The functionality I wish it had: -see the reviews of people who I am following.
-see the average rating of a book on my lists.
-be able to sort books on my shelf by several data fields.
-be able to clearly see which of the books on my shelves that I have (on my device or in the cloud)....whether I bought from Amazon or another retailer and then put them on my kindle.
-highlighted new releases by authors on my shelves
Terrible app. What any reader would like to do on the Kindle is research books to then add to Goodreads list. Doesn't do this. What really is the point of the Goodreads app on the Kindle?
I think the integration is great- adding books from Amazon to Goodreads, but now I'm wondering... is there any thought to adding the books in my "want to read" list to my Amazon "wish list"? I think this would be a great feature for the future.
Why this is not available in other countries is beyond my understanding. It is not like you can buy books here. Or there is anything that could be copyright problems. So pretty please, with Cherry on top. Bring it also for other countries.
goodreads on kindle pw in the UK!!!!The downside is that you'll be connected to the USA version of amazon instead (so $ instead of £) but if you can live with that...
I logged a support ticket with amazon this morning for something else - and it turns out the end result means that I'm now seeing the 'g' in my nav bar on my paperwhite...
1./ On your computer, open a browser and go to Manage Your Kindle
2./ Click 'Country Settings'
3./ Click Change
4./ Click "transfer your kindle account to amazon.com"
5./ On your kindle you should notice (may need a reboot) the 'g' and all the goodread goodness underneath!
I hope this helps.
It definitely needs a way to automatically update your progress in a book from the Kindle to the Goodreads website. It should also automatically update books and put them in the "Currently Reading" and "Read" shelves - hell even the wish list from Amazon should be copied into the "Want to Read" shelf! As is, this is not really integration but more so an alternate way to view the website and a quicker way to a book profile on Goodreads.
I just received my own Kindle Paperwhite as a birthday present yesterday, and I love it! I don't know if this was already requested, but I would love to be able to update my reading progress (page/percentage) automatically or through the Goodreads app. Also, I would like to be able to see and set my yearly reading goal.
Um, no, as much as I like my Kindle (and adjusting to the Paperwhite), I'd rather update books/shelves manually than have the Goodreads do that automatically in any fashion.
Julia wrote: "Um, no, as much as I like my Kindle (and adjusting to the Paperwhite), I'd rather update books/shelves manually than have the Goodreads do that automatically in any fashion."I was talking about the reading progress. Right now, we're unable to manually update the reading progress on the Goodreads app on the Paperwhite.
Giselle, I agree with you on reading progress. It was Charles' suggestion of extending it further I didn't fancy.
Along with Alexandra, Craig, and Bob.. Im really disappoointed with the no actual option to update reading progress via kindle. I thought that's what they said was in the update, but I guess not. The added on goodreads function doesn't even work for me! Every time I try to even post a status, change a book to 'currently reading' or just anything, it says 'request failed'... And I have a five bar connection, it's not me. Really disappointed :(
Carmen wrote: "Not in the UK it isn't. When will Goodreads come to the first gen UK Paperwhite????? Xx" it's possible to get it in the UK... See above!
The "Cri du coeur" of US/CA/AUS customers for inclusion of older models is apparently more important than the Cri du coeur of the UK customers for integration. No, I will not change my account to US.
We want to be fully integrated…I don't want to apply a plaster to the situation, I want it resolved.
Oops!…my bad!…I'm British, so again my Cri du coeur will fall on deaf ears.
Why isn't it working in the uk??? I was so excited when I seen you can do it and now i feel let down! :(
The new Kindle Touch (good God why does Amazon feel the need to rename their shit every month?) has Goodreads. The previous-gen Kindle Touch doesn't. Seriously? Why the hell not?
Im currently waiting for this functionality to work in Mexico, i just have a glimpse in a trip for USA and it was good.I hope this work soon in other countries.
