A Century of New Historical Fiction Reading

Posted by Cybil on February 2, 2025

Now that we’re a quarter of the way into the 21st century—that’s still hard to believe—it can be interesting to ponder our various perspectives on the previous century.

One way to go about that, if you’re a bookworm, is to seek out stories and novels set in a particular decade of the 20th century. That’s the idea behind today’s collection, in which Goodreads’ ace editorial staff wades into the stacks to assemble a century of historical fiction, sorted by decade.

The books below span a wide range of genres—some even live in between genres—and are sequenced chronologically by decade, according to when the initial or the main action of the story takes place.

That’s the when. As to where, you’ll find lots of potential destinations: an Irish hospital circa 1918. A downtown apartment in 1950s Tehran. A one-room cabin in 1973 Alabama. You’ll find a procession of accomplished authors here, too, including Isabel Allende, Hernan Diaz, Jonathan Franzen, Kristin Hannah, Han Kang, James McBride, Silvia Moreno-GarciaOlga Tokarczuk, Amor Towles, and Colson Whitehead.

These selections are, of course, just a sliver of the available books set in the various decades of the 20th century. But it’s a fun way to look back again via historical fiction. Sherri This is GREAT! Thank you! So many good choices.

message 52: by Kerry (new)

Kerry I refuse to believe the 1990's should be classed as historical fiction! :)

message 53: by Cathryn (new)

Cathryn Thanks for the decade-by-decade listing. It really informs my next choices.

Josh Rachel wrote: "It's all historical for my age group being born in 2000 I don't remember anything before 2003 or so even 9/11 is historic to me sadly"

Hi it's me, I'm dead after reading this :)

message 55: by Lisa (new)

Lisa So the 1990es are now part of historical fiction? Well, I guess that's not wrong, but it's kind of a low blow to begin the day with.

message 56: by A (new)

A K Which one is the best here?

message 57: by Sydney (new)

Sydney W. Anita de Monte Laughs Last was AMAZING!

message 58: by Katherine (new)

Katherine Moss Some of these are definitely going on my list...I need some more history to read, that's for sure, and historical fiction is one of my absolute favorite genres; that, along with fantasy and sci-fi. I alos love historical fantasy.

Read Once We Were Brothers, or The Nightingale. Both fabulous!

Anna I love creating reading challenges and decades/eras could be a good one.

You should be looking at the 1940s. WWII started in Sept. of 1939 and ended in Sept. of 1945. On the above list, you could try We Were the Lucky Ones by Georgia Hunter.

Darren the reason that it's "hard to believe" "that we’re a quarter of the way into the 21st century" is that we're not.

message 63: by Jean (new)

Jean Awesome. Now do this with romance books, please!

message 64: by Jules (new)

Jules Larimore I think these are wonderful titles, but you do readers a disservice by skipping over thousands of years of historical fiction. There's been so much attention paid to the 19th and 20th centuries, but what about all the amazing stories prior to that?

I agree. Retro is a good name, or just 20th century fiction.

message 68: by Revrend (new)

message 69: by Mach (new)

Veronica Maria wrote: "Does anyone have more suggestions for books set in the 1970s - even good books written during the '70s?"

No-one seems to have replied to this. Tessa Hadley is a novelist who writes wonderfully about Britain in the 1960s and 70s. A shame she’s not in this list. My favourite is Clever Girl.

Another odd omission from this list is Kate Atkinson. Shrines of Gaiety is set in the 1920s, and a number of her novels have sections set in WWII and the decade after it.

Daisy Jones and the Six, The Women by Kristin Hannah, Crossroads by Jonathan Franzen, and The Interestings by Meg Wolitzer. I've read and liked all of these.

Becky Batchelor The Lost King of England RJ Batchelor
This book won the 2024 International Impact Award. It should not be left out.
Set between WWI and WWII, It is a page-turner and difficult to put down. I can't wait for Book Two, The Lost Tsar of Russia. It will be released in March and is also set in the 1900s.

message 73: by Nicholas (new)

Nicholas Foster Set in the 1910s, 'Parade's End' by Ford Madox Ford is one of the great books (in fact four books in one) depicting that period.

Right?! 1990 is "historical fiction"? 40 years ago was the 1950s and not my childhood years of the 1980s.

Sue Finally, a post from the Goodreads team on Historical fiction! This is so rare! I do not remember seeing this many likes and comments on a post in a long, long time! Keep them coming for us fans of this genre!

message 76: by Karin (new)

Karin For me anything set in the 20th century is not historical fiction, period. It must at least be set in the 19th century or before. I prefer the middle ages and renaissance times, unfortunatly nowadays one finds seldom recommendation lists for historical fiction which suggest such. All what is to be found is mainly set in the 20th century and more or less WW1 and WW2 stories, which I am not much interested to read about. I would wish more variety in recommendations for historical fiction. It is my favorite genre and history goes way, way back, so many centuries and does not stop before 1901.

message 77: by Eileen (new)

Eileen Karin- It's a matter of perspective. Some of the best books I ever read were in a "Contemporary Fiction" class in the late 1960s. These books would now qualify as historical fiction.

seriously! i was so excited to see this list and the second i opened it and saw it started in the 1900s my hopes were immediately dashed lol. i guess really old historical fiction must not be popular enough :(

I would suggest to you "the Nightingale" by Kristin Hannah, "A Vintage Affair" by Isabel Wolff (bounces between more modern day and WW2 telling a story of a survivor). "The Book of Lost Names" by Kristin Harmel. Those three were really emotional reads for me!

message 88: by Maisie (new)

Maisie M Someone at goodreads clearly didn’t do their research bc The heaven and Earth Grocery Store is not set in the 70’s it’s very much set in the 30’s with an opening chapter in the 70’s.

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* Kat wrote: "As a person and as a scholar I see historical fiction as anything set before 1945. Anything after that is modern literature. Todays marketing is messing with our heads."

Yes, that's correct, it's generally 50 years minimum from current time period, so 90's cannot be considered historical unless you go by a very strange and non-technical definition.

Still, these lists are fun!

Rosalie Apple wrote: "How many of them are set in the holocaust time periid? Really wanna read a holocaust book!

Many books written about The Holocaust were probably written after 1945. I have read many accounts of living through The Holocaust, that I can’t recommend any book at this time, even though every book was well worth my time.
