Our Guide to Out-of-This-World 2025 Fantasy and Science Fiction

Fantasy and science fiction readers, we have some good news: There are some deeply intriguing stories on the 2025 horizon for dedicated genre fans. To accommodate future reading plans, we’ve gathered here a whole pile of adult and YA fantasy and science fiction books coming this year that we’ve spotted your fellow Goodreads members adding to their Want to Read shelves. Looking for romantasy? Check out our most anticipated reads of that subgenre here.
SFF regulars will note that there are a lot of familiar names returning to shelves this year. British author Joe Abercrombie, the brain behind the modern fantasy classics of The First Law series, is back with The Devils, a dark fantasy/horror adventure featuring a team of rather extreme antiheroes—monsters, killers, the odd necromancer … those sorts of fellows. In the sci-fi aisle, look for Nnedi Okorafor’s hugely anticipated new novel, Death of the Author, which incorporates some clever meta elements into a story about artificial intelligence, androids, and storytelling itself.
What else? Robert Jackson Bennett chronicles the further adventures of detective Ana Dolabra in A Drop of Corruption, the second book in his unique eco-resonant fantasy setting. The great V.E. Schwab is back in circulation this summer with the lesbian vampire tale Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil. And YA readers might want to check out Breath of the Dragon, the first book in a new fantasy duology based on characters and concepts from martial arts legend Bruce Lee.
Also look for new stories from Cassandra Clare, Tracy Deonn, R.F. Kuang, John Scalzi, Samantha Shannon, Sue Lynn Tan, and Martha Wells, plus a fascinating story about the real-life historical figure known as Malinalli. And as always, those of us who appreciate compelling book cover art will find many sterling examples below.
Click on those cover images for more information on each book, and add any interesting leads to your own Want to Read shelf. Happy reading in 2025!

Was gonna say the same! I think it isn't on the list because it doesn't have an official release date, but come on! It is definitely a 2025 must read:-)

"Last Hour Between Worlds" absolutely blew me away, and it was even my top book of the year.
