Great Tips to Spend More Time Reading in 2024

Posted by Roshni on January 12, 2024

Congrats on taking the first (and very important) step of the 2024 Goodreads Reading Challenge: signing up! By joining, you've committed to reading this year—we give that goal 5 stars! We'd also like to give you a head start on your resolution by sharing these tried-and-tested tips for setting your goal, increasing your reading, and discovering books to read.

(Haven't signed up yet? There's no time like the present—join below.)

Pro Tips for Reaching Your Goal

Plan Accordingly

Make it easy to pick up a book to read. Habit experts will tell you that the easier you make it to do something, the more you will do it. Place a book right by where you’ll be reading (bedside table, couch, in your backpack for your commute), so you don’t have to think about picking up a book.

Push yourself, but be realistic. Avoid the dreaded reading slump by committing to an achievable goal. You can always increase or decrease your goal throughout the year, especially when life gets in the way. No pressure from us if you need to adjust.

Trying to figure out a goal? Use the calendar as a guideline: 12 books (one per month), 24 books (two per month), or even 52 books (one per week).

Boost Your Progress

Rereading a book counts toward your goal, and avid readers recommend it as a way to get out of a reading slump. Sometimes you just don’t know what you want to read, and the comfort of a well-loved book can get you back into reading.

Audiobooks count! Listening to a book while driving, cooking, cleaning, exercising…you name it…will help you enjoy great stories. Mixing it up between audiobooks, print books, and ebooks will help you find more ways to read. Check out these great listens to get resolution ready!

Use your Want to Read shelf to help keep track of what you'd like to read next.

If you haven’t already discovered the ability to put books on hold at your local library, now’s the time to start! Build up a stack of books that you’re interested in reading, and get notified when they are ready for pickup.

If you’re an Amazon Prime member, you have access to a selection of Kindle Unlimited eBooks and audiobooks at no extra cost to you. Go to www.amazon.com/primereading and find amazing reads included with your Prime membership (available in the U.S., Canada, Brazil, the U.K., Germany, Spain, France, Italy, India, Japan, China, and Australia). Or check out Amazon First Reads to get one free, pre-release Kindle book a month (available in the U.S., U.K., and Australia).

Find More Books You'll Love

Read books you enjoy. This sounds simple, but sometimes we start reading a book that's just not the right fit. You feel like you should continue reading it, but can’t find the motivation to pick it up again, so it starts to block you from reading. We say cut your losses and move on—there’s no rule that you have to finish a book. There are so many amazing books out there, so choose another one and keep your reading habit going. Need some inspiration? Browse the books that other readers have been loving in the 2023 Goodreads Choice Awards or Goodreads members’ most anticipated books of 2024.

Read more than one book at a time. Not always in the mood for the same genre? Like more cerebral books during the day and lighter books in the evening? Consider reading a few books at the same time so you can choose the one that fits your current mood.

Browse through Goodreads, including our user-generated reading lists or most popular new books of the month. Goodreads staff members have also shared their recent favorites.

Discover new books in your favorite genres, including romance, mystery & thriller, speculative fiction, and young adult.

Wishing you all a wonderful year of good reading! Tell us in the comments how many books you aspire to read this year!

Maya Hallberg My goal is 75, because I read 72 last year, hoping I can get it.

message 202: by Ali (new)

Ali One advice that isn't here but made my reading schedule better: sign up to a library, if you have one close enough.
Having a set date when you absolutely have to return a book can do wonders for your finding time to read it (or: deciding to drop it for now).

message 203: by Reanne (new)

Reanne I did 60 last year, trying for 70 this year. The only reason I can get that many read is that half are graphic novels. They are easy to read in small chunks & are usually much shorter than other books I read so zi can get thru them quickly.

message 204: by Patti (new)

Patti Lisk I love re-reading some books each year. When can we get a a want to Re-read button added to “want to read,” “ currently reading,” and “read?” 😀

message 205: by Fred (new)

Fred i read 38 books last year, my target was 26. this year my goal is 40. i read more than 1 book at the same time. either a novella or short fiction and longer book or non fiction and fiction so that i don't get bored. sometimes it can be 3 books where the 3rd book is an audiobook.

message 206: by Alyce Carroll (new)

Alyce Carroll I am 85 years young and as such have a lot of time to read which I like . I read approximately three to four books a week. I usual try to read a different genre going between Regency, contemporary western and always my favorite author Debbie Macomber. I find doing this I never tire reading at all.

message 207: by June (new)

June Staff I have set my goal at 36 this year as I beat my challenge of last year. I would liked to have put 40 but didn't want to aim too high.

message 208: by Cathy (new)

Cathy G I love this challenge, I have been doing this ever since Goodreads started doing it. This year I committed to 100 books, so far I am 2 ahead of schedule. Last year I signed up for 150, I did not make it, off by 25 books. Unfortunately my husband of 56 years passed, and reading has become a safe haven.(keeps me focused on other things such as traveling to fantastical places and solving crimes with my favorite detectives)

message 209: by Mary (new)

Mary I started doing the challenge several years ago and chose three books per month. Each year I add two more books to my count. Two of these years, I've had to go to the library and read a few picture books in December to get to my goal but those are books too!

message 210: by Bj (new)

Bj Johnny wrote: "My goal is 1. I will at least meet that this year."I've had years where reading one whole book just wasn't possible. Do what you can, and have fun reading!

message 211: by Sheeba (new)

Sheeba Khan I read 50 books last year and started my goodreads account in the middle of the year, so was able to record just about half of them. This year I am more realistic about my goal and have reduced it to 25 books. It overwhelmed me last year.

message 212: by SHANE (new)

SHANE I've been setting a goal of 104, 2 a week, for some years now. I've never hit my target, and the closest I've ever got is 99. Not the slightest bit disheartened that I've never hit the target, and never been tempted to revise my target downwards. It's all good!

message 213: by Chloe (last edited Feb 02, 2024 09:33AM) (new)

Chloe Labaqueredebost My goal is 75 which I think I might finish my april....

message 214: by May (new)

May Smith My goal is 100.

message 215: by jazmine (new)

jazmine Olson Love these tips! It's funny but why does it feel so bad to not finish a book that you start lol. My goal is 60. I did 55 last year. I've found reading series has helped me to read a lot more. Already on book 10 for the year so starting off strong! Happy reading everyone.

message 216: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Meyers This year, I’m setting my goal on the number of pages to read for the year instead of number of books. Previously, I found myself choosing what to read based on length to get through more books. But, reading Anna Karenina should count for more than a book like A Christmas Carol. (Both of which I loved!) I wish Goodreads would let you set your goal by either. This year, my book goal is fewer than last (100) but my page goal is higher (30k).

message 217: by jazmine (new)

jazmine Olson Steven wrote: "I'm into book 18 of 2024, my goal is 25. I pace in a controlled environment while reading and I read more than if I'm seated. At the end of the year, I do wish Goodreads would publish the exact num..."

Wow book 18, that's awesome! And I love the idea of getting credits for reading. There are so many books I don't read if they aren't on my Kindle unlimited subscription. I would probably push to 100 if I had an incentive. Though I doubt with the avid readers on here that would be enough lol

message 218: by Anick (new)

Anick Globensky-bromow Kyla wrote: "My goal is 150 dunno if I can make it but def gonna try!"

Did that in 2022, it is certainly doable! It was my best reading year ever!

message 219: by Hector (new)

Hector Navarro I put 20 books 📚🤓

message 220: by Anick (new)

Anick Globensky-bromow My goal this year is 90. I read 16 in January, it is doable, but I will start a new job soon and I'm sure it will impact my reading time hehe. My best year ever was 2022 with 150. I was aiming for 100. We'll see how it goes!

message 221: by Tammy (new)

Tammy Isabelle wrote: "I just have no motivation to read, like I'm sitting scrolling on my phone, thinking that I should read, but I'm just not motivated."

I would suggest you to be sure you have a reading app (like Kindle) on your phone and some books you like in your library. Then, before you allow yourself to scroll for the day, do a little bit of reading for that time. You can scroll later : ) But, hopefully, you'll be reading a great book that makes you want to come back to it! Try reading a mystery so you'll want to come back to see the end of it.

You can do it! Good luck!

message 222: by Tammy (new)

Tammy I didn't know I could count my audiobooks! If that's the case, I definitely made my goal last year, when I didn't think I did. I don't have as much time to read as I do to listen, and I am so glad I found audiobooks! I'm listening to books that I don't think I would get through in print ... like The Count of Monte Christo!

message 223: by David (new)

David Yohalem I find my reading rate varies with subject matter, quality of the writing and genre. Other variables come into play, as well. But I found that setting goals of specific numbers of volumes inhibited me from approaching several works that I would desperately like to have read. Examples include books by Olga Tokarczuk (ca. 900 pages for The Books of Jacob, but in the contents listed as 7 books, Orhan Pamuk (733 pages), Mahfouz (The Cairo Trilogy), which sit on my shelf unread. Should one receive credit for reading 6 books if one reads Tolkien's LotR? Also, Gódel Escher and Bach which clocks in at about 750 pages. None of these are easy reading (unlike Tolkien), although the first three are quire readable, but inertia of rest..., you know. What to do? How to count? Would (or should) the three titles mentioned total three books or ten? Anyway, I think I suggested forty for the year. With three down in January.

message 224: by Erika (new)

Erika Shore I suggest a minimum of a chapter a day. This to be is realistic since some books have longer chapters than others. Or at the minimal carve out half an hour for yourself to read.

message 225: by Emlyn (new)

Emlyn Lunn I read 26 books last year and I have chosen 25 books this. I've recently discovered audio books, Brilliant, many good reads to choose from

message 226: by Linda (new)

Linda Gibboney Read books that you enjoy not what everyone else is reading. I even put a hold on people sharing books with me because I felt like I had to read their selection and wasn't getting to the books on my Want to Read list. Carry your book with you..long wait at the doctor's office, on the bus, resting on the park bench after a long walk.

message 227: by Barbara (new)

Barbara Benton I find that I read faster on my kindle than with a “real” book - I’m not as distracted by looking ahead, etc!

message 228: by David (new)

David Donovan Last year I put 52, which I hope to achieve someday but if you’re a person who tried last year and didn’t make it like me, I took my total from last year and added 1! Slow progress!

message 229: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Trying for 24 again, since I failed last year by 3 🤨

message 230: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca 32

message 231: by Fran Carter (new)

Fran Carter I have decided on one book per month. I may be able to do more; but I want to be realistic.

message 232: by Linda Wilhelm (new)

Linda Wilhelm Do real books count and if so how do you add them to your goal?

message 233: by jm_rives (new)

jm_rives I've had luck with a daily page goal. Sometimes even 1 page a day.

message 234: by Mily (new)

Mily My goal is 100 books. Even though on average I read 150 books. I don't feel the need to read that many.

message 235: by Bridgett (new)

Bridgett Junkin Once I retired, and then discovered audiobooks, my reading increased dramatically. I believe my first goal was 26. I kept going over my goals each year and last year I read 80! 😳 I’m also in competition with my best friend. I am constantly listening thanks to Audible and free kindle books. Alexa will read to me even if it’s only in print on kindle. Not the same as a narrator but I can still do stuff and read at the same time.

message 236: by [deleted user] (new)

My goal is 52 books, 1 per week. While I usually have one "heavy" book going, I also include children's picture books, and frequently intersperse poetry, which are usually quicker reads. It's also fun to pick up some middle/juvenile books from time to time.

message 237: by Edy (new)

Edy I did 40 last year but read way more than that, so i'm aiming for 80 this year.

message 238: by Anne (new)

Anne My tip is to use the Libby digital library app if your library offers it. I prefer physical books but the wait times to borrow at my library are often so long that I can get them faster on Libby. You can also delay receiving the book for three weeks if you aren't ready. I download the books to the Kindle app on my phone and that way I always have a book with me when an opportunity to read presents itself. I did the challenge last year and it really increased the time I spent reading instead of wasting time on my phone!

message 239: by Lauren (new)

Lauren I had 82 last year so my goal is 85 but I am hoping I can even pass that will see🙂📚💕

message 240: by Zaihan (new)

Zaihan My goal is 99 books.

message 241: by Jo-jean (new)

Jo-jean Keller I read 232 books last year. My goal is 210 this year in case I hit a slump! I use Interlibrary Loan consistently and read some Kindle books as well! I am an avid horseperson so read a lot of equine studies. I don't watch a lot of TV!

message 242: by John of Canada (new)

John of Canada 106. So far so good.

message 243: by LadyBookSpartan (new)

LadyBookSpartan 75 It’s not the amount for me. But the keeping track. I’ve always been an avid reader and love this app for record keeping This is my 5th year of setting and reaching my goals. Thank you Goodreads

message 244: by Teresa (new)

Teresa Biggie My goal was always 52 for many years.. and I never reached it.. in the 30 s or 40s ... I did not have any issues with not reaching the goal...a goal is something you strive for. Then I read a hint.. start a book the same day you finish one.. even if it is just the first page... OK.. the year I did that I read 75 books... last year it was over 100. So before I go to bed.. I pick out the next book, open it up, read one page.. put my book mark in it and set it down and I am more than willing to pick up the next day

message 245: by Diane (new)

Diane I've found my goal of 30-35 is achievable for me and gives me a lot of confidence in every day life. I've started a Christmas Read book - big books (Trollope, Collins etc) that I don't know whether I'm going to thoroughly enjoy but I strive ahead anyway. Also I have to confess - I just skipped 30 pages of the Stewart Granger bio I'm reading - did not want to read about a blood thirsty safari - and I don't feel guilty for skipping!!

message 246: by Diana (new)

Diana Stevens My goal is 270, audiobooks count also.

message 247: by Lilah (new)

Lilah Risner i think i did 50.. i did 25 last year and read 27 or 28 I think

message 248: by Joyce (new)

Joyce Highsmith I have pledged 100, last year 110 and I made it. You can do it.!!

message 249: by Megan (new)

Megan Wood I choose. 50. Last year I picked 50 but actually read 72. I read a lot but read for enjoyment rather than number of books. I have so many I want to read.

message 250: by Gustavo (new)

Gustavo Souza Including the books I’m reading for my kids 😉
