Congrats on taking the first (and very important) step of the 2024 Goodreads Reading Challenge: signing up! By joining, you've committed to reading this year—we give that goal 5 stars! We'd also like to give you a head start on your resolution by sharing these tried-and-tested tips for setting your goal, increasing your reading, and discovering books to read.

Pro Tips for Reaching Your Goal

Plan Accordingly

Make it easy to pick up a book to read. Habit experts will tell you that the easier you make it to do something, the more you will do it. Place a book right by where you’ll be reading (bedside table, couch, in your backpack for your commute), so you don’t have to think about picking up a book.

Push yourself, but be realistic. Avoid the dreaded reading slump by committing to an achievable goal. You can always increase or decrease your goal throughout the year, especially when life gets in the way. No pressure from us if you need to adjust.

Trying to figure out a goal? Use the calendar as a guideline: 12 books (one per month), 24 books (two per month), or even 52 books (one per week).

Boost Your Progress

Rereading a book counts toward your goal, and avid readers recommend it as a way to get out of a reading slump. Sometimes you just don’t know what you want to read, and the comfort of a well-loved book can get you back into reading.

Audiobooks count! Listening to a book while driving, cooking, cleaning, exercising…you name it…will help you enjoy great stories. Mixing it up between audiobooks, print books, and ebooks will help you find more ways to read. Check out these great listens to get resolution ready!

Use your Want to Read shelf to help keep track of what you'd like to read next.

If you haven’t already discovered the ability to put books on hold at your local library, now’s the time to start! Build up a stack of books that you’re interested in reading, and get notified when they are ready for pickup.

If you’re an Amazon Prime member, you have access to a selection of Kindle Unlimited eBooks and audiobooks at no extra cost to you. Go to www.amazon.com/primereading and find amazing reads included with your Prime membership (available in the U.S., Canada, Brazil, the U.K., Germany, Spain, France, Italy, India, Japan, China, and Australia). Or check out Amazon First Reads to get one free, pre-release Kindle book a month (available in the U.S., U.K., and Australia).

Find More Books You'll Love

Read books you enjoy. This sounds simple, but sometimes we start reading a book that's just not the right fit. You feel like you should continue reading it, but can’t find the motivation to pick it up again, so it starts to block you from reading. We say cut your losses and move on—there’s no rule that you have to finish a book. There are so many amazing books out there, so choose another one and keep your reading habit going. Need some inspiration? Browse the books that other readers have been loving in the 2023 Goodreads Choice Awards or Goodreads members’ most anticipated books of 2024.

Read more than one book at a time. Not always in the mood for the same genre? Like more cerebral books during the day and lighter books in the evening? Consider reading a few books at the same time so you can choose the one that fits your current mood.

Browse through Goodreads, including our user-generated reading lists or most popular new books of the month. Goodreads staff members have also shared their recent favorites.

Discover new books in your favorite genres, including romance, mystery & thriller, speculative fiction, and young adult.

Wishing you all a wonderful year of good reading! Tell us in the comments how many books you aspire to read this year!

You read ONE THOUSAND, TWO HUNDRED books in a year?!

message 152: by Jane (new)

Jane I have always been a big reader and i come from a family of readers. I aim to finish a book each week, but sometimes nonfiction titles take longer. Or other things get in the way. I managed 45 out of 50 last year. So I'm going for 45 this year. But at the end of the day what matters is how much pleasure you get from reading.

message 153: by Linda (new)

Linda Dunn I upped my goal this year to 135. I surpassed my goal last year. I would love to read more but life happens and unfortunately adulting is expected.

message 154: by Catherine (new)

Catherine Right now, reading 3 books, at a time, is my limit.

message 155: by Sandra (last edited Feb 01, 2024 04:05PM) (new)

Sandra Hi! I set 24 for this year! I just got back into reading last winter! I have a book on my Kindle I'm reading, a hardcover book on my side table and a Audiobook on my phone!

message 156: by Dana (new)

Dana Mendoza I aspire to read 45 books this year (or more) 🙌🤞

message 157: by archivist13 (new)

archivist13 my goal is to read 50 this year, since i have heaps going on.

message 158: by Daisy (new)

Daisy My library checks out ebooks for 21 days so I read 5% each day. And when I have a few books going at a time, I fly through books each month. I keep track of my progress with a spreadsheet.

message 159: by Erin (new)

Erin Cosgrave I’m going for 50. A little less than one a week should be doable for me. We’ll see.

message 160: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca Crowther My goal is 40 :)

message 161: by R (new)

R After I started reading books I enjoy, I finished 25% of my year's goal in 1 month.

message 162: by Merlyn (new)

Merlyn I’ve set my goal and i read 4 books in 2024 but the they arent count for the challenge can i ask why?

message 163: by mireia ★ (new)

mireia ★ (taylor's version) .

message 164: by Quillixir (new)

Quillixir I usually aim for 20 and just try to get the most books read that I can. For me, the challenge is more for fun rather than a solid goal. January has been a particularly good reading month. Hopefully, the rest of the year will follow suit!

message 165: by Phil (new)

Phil Merlyn wrote: "I’ve set my goal and i read 4 books in 2024 but the they arent count for the challenge can i ask why?"

Have you listed the day you finished reading them? They won't show up as books you've read this year if you don't.

message 166: by Lynne (new)

Lynne My goal is always 36. I fell short last year from a busy December but am ahead of schedule so far in 2024.

message 167: by Anna (new)

Anna Dear "Goodreads" you count only my English Kindle book, the last year 28.
I am an East-European. I read many paperbooks in my native language, ca 30-40 a year.
Reading is a sort of sweet addiction.

message 168: by Winter (new)

Winter Collins I always have a book next to me on my couch but the pull of social media is stronger most of the time

message 169: by Cathy (new)

Cathy I get deeply discounted audiobooks from Chirp and do chores listening to books during the day and I have a Kindle Unlimited account for books I read before bed. I’m retired now so if I can’t put my kindle down until 4AM, it’s ok.

message 170: by Alina (new)

Alina My Goal this year is 40

message 171: by Charity (new)

Charity Beacock I put my goal for 50 books this year. I average 2 books a week right now depending on the genera. Just got out of a reading slump so off and running for this year.
I always have at least one book with me and audio books as well.
Love my kobo reader and my local library. Both are excellent

message 172: by Alain (new)

Alain My reading goal this year is 45 books, I am currently on 6 books read already and counting!!

Audrey Stars in Her Eye Meenal wrote: "200. It's funny how Goodreads is encouraging readers to DNF books and read multiple books at once."
I read multiple books at once. I do book reviews for my blog, but I also read books that are in my TBR, or like my Christian/self-help books. Oh, and I have an audiobook going. I'm book ADD>

message 174: by Naomi S Griffiths (new)

Naomi S Griffiths I set my goal at 12, but do read daily & will likely surpass that.

message 175: by Ellisha (new)

Ellisha M I've done most of these. I read 170+ books last year. I lowered my goal this year so I can finish my doctorate. So far, I'm 5 books ahead. Stay motivated!

Martha Amber J wrote: "Lots of good tips here actually. I like that they mentioned letting go of a book that you just don't find interesting. I think more people need to hear this. Including me lol. I have to remind myse..."

I agree. I usually give it around 3 chapters before I decide to give up. There are too many good books to be read than trying to struggle to finish one that just doesn't interest you.

message 177: by Tanya (last edited Feb 02, 2024 08:34AM) (new)

Tanya Tesh My goal is 20 this year. I'm using the Libby app to deliver books from my local library direct to my kindle. It's a great way to save money. The added bonus is that the return deadline from the library inspires me to read more, faster.

message 178: by Leslie (new)

Leslie I think this is the 7th year I have set a Goal. I really enjoy setting the goal. Some years I have exceeded it and some years not. One of the things I have done to help me reach my goal is to set a daily goal of 50 pages a day.

message 179: by Helen (new)

Helen Robinson My goal is the same as the previous few years which is 35 but I tend to over-achieve, depending upon where I am and what's happening. Last year I read 53 and the previous years total was 48. But for me it isn't really the number that's important.

As adults, we know ourselves; for some, 1 is a great goal. Maybe that is the one that will open the incredible world of books to that reader.

message 181: by Holly (new)

Holly Kelly-Quick Considering I went from 30 books a year to 100 last year I think I’m good for this year 👍

message 182: by Joanne (new)

Joanne Pinder I discovered audio books this past year and it has been a life-changer! I listen to them while gardening, cooking, or working on a jigsaw puzzle. When I wake up in the middle of the night and can’t get back to sleep (a common occurrence), I put my earbuds in and listen to my audiobook.

message 183: by Kaprisha (new)

Kaprisha Hi there I read to many books st once on and off go into a slump than don't feel like reading I think I do better with audio book this year and graphic novels, manga

message 184: by Michy (new)

Michy I set a goal for 20! I do a personal growth with audible and I read at night. Sometimes if I am too busy, I make sure to read 10 pages a day! If you read 10 pages a day for 10 days that’s a 100 pages :) helps me out so much when I’ve had a long day!

message 185: by Gladys (new)

Gladys 60 is the goal for 2024. Last year was the first year I decided to get back into consistent, daily reading and I read 55 books. My local library and kindle unlimited make this nearly effortless.

message 186: by Kaprisha (new)

Kaprisha And I have 100 books for my reading goal ivalso go between adult, teen and middile grade books

message 187: by Jade (new)

Jade Last year my goal was 20. I joined a book club so that was 1 book a month for that then some I just wanted to read spread in. I ended up finding and loving audiobooks! I started listening to them when I was driving instead of music and read 51 books last year.

gianpaolo pasta 36: 3 a months

message 189: by Ash (new)

Ash Feigel Hi Im trying for Ten books this year, not included audiobook or manga/graphic novels, being dyslexic this seem like a good challenge, not sure if I will make it but Ill try my best. -smile- (live gets busy you know)

message 190: by Miranda (new)

Miranda I've put 37 books this year just one more than last year. I've read 8 so far, but that's because the nights are so long.

message 191: by Jacqueline (new)

Jacqueline I'm retired and have more time to read. Like my dad, who taught me to read from a very young age, I'd rather read a timetable or a directory than nothing. I can read while listening to the TV, and I usually read one book and have my Echo dot reading a kindle book to me while in the bathroom or doing things in the house. I never miss an opportunity to read - or listen. Its like an addiction!

message 192: by Donna (new)

Donna Acquire books multiple ways, free Kindle, through your Libraries website, buy books at yards sales, buy books at Library sales, buy books at libraries Book Nooks, check out Little Libraries, exchange with friends, BookBub.

I also cut my losses but much earlier. If the book does not grab me in the first few pages, I move on.

message 195: by Sakina (new)

Sakina I always reach my “goal” as they are adjustable and I include my Bible chapters which encourage me to read the Holy Bible as well ☺️

message 196: by Shane (last edited Feb 02, 2024 09:01AM) (new)

Shane C I read everyday usually for an hour at lunch and another couple of hours ( or more) in the evening. I also read regularly when on transit or trains or flights. Set a goal last year initially of 160 books but raised it three times so by November my goal was 195 - ended up reading 205. Find that having a regular routine of reading helps reach my goals.

message 197: by TJ (new)

TJ Hoban Word of mouth helps you too since you trust who you know and they have done the time

message 198: by Alexandra (new)

Alexandra 64🤞

Julie Morgan I always have a “ real
Book “ and A kindle on the go at the same time ! Usual one fiction and one non fiction . Kindle app is so handy for reading out and about while waiting at the doctors … travelling at short notice , in a queue etc. I set my goal usually at 26 , one per fortnight but upped to 36 this year . The most I’ve done in a year was 117, I dread to think
What the house was like 🤣
