The Most Anticipated Young Adult Books of 2024

Posted by Sharon on December 29, 2023

Probably this goes without saying, but you don’t have to be a young adult to enjoy Young Adult fiction. In fact, many grown-ups have found that some of the most imaginative writing on the market comes from this particular aisle, year in and year out.

Continuing our Most Anticipated Books of 2024 series, we’ve collected below the hottest YA titles of the upcoming year, as determined by what Goodreads regulars are scooting onto their Want to Read shelves. This time around, we’ve broken out the books into three general categories: Fantasy & Sci-Fi, Contemporary & Historical Fiction, and Horror.

A few items of note: Several big fantasy series are delivering their final installments this year, including the long-awaited finale to the Legacy of Orïsha series from Tomi Adeyemi and The Stolen Heir duology from Holly Black. Also look for some intriguing series debuts, like Hafsah Faizal’s vampire/historical/heist story A Tempest of Tea.

We’re noticing some book title twists developing in 2024, too. In horror, might we suggest pairing The Blonde Dies First with The Black Girl Survives in This One. Or for an ambitious three-part, spec-fic adventure, we’ve got The Bad Ones, The Eternal Ones, and The Dangerous Ones.

Also en route this year for the discriminating YA enthusiast: a few sweet rom-coms, plenty of twisty mysteries, and at least one reverse adaptation of the Bollywood film aesthetic. Debut author Carolina Ixta wins bonus points for the title of her first book, Shut Up, This Is Serious.

Scroll over the book cover images below for more details, and add anything interesting to your Want to Read shelf.

Ms. Yingling While Goodreads' support of YA literature is appreciated, it would be nice if you reinstated the Middle Grade year end category for books. If you want to have adult readers, we need to start creating them at younger ages, and teachers, librarians, and lovers of middle grade literature were very disappointed that your support of this level of books was withdrawn in 2023.

Madeleine Reckless by Lauren Roberts!

Kristen Fort The Brightwood Code by Monica Hesse - either May or June of this year, and historical fiction.

Mrs. Yingling, I hope Goodreads higher-ups will listen; middle-grade books are wonderful (for any age)!

Natasa YA covers continue to be amazing ✨

message 12: by Law (new)

Law I'm disappointed that Goodreads removed the Middle Grade and Children's Awards. Why did they put in Romantasy instead?

Jim YA authors/publishers need to look into new fonts/typefaces/artwork! These books all start to look the same.
Boring.

Agreed. Middle Grade is usually better than YA books anyway.
