81 New Nature Books to Get You in the Mood for Spring

Posted by Cybil on April 17, 2023

Spring has largely sprung, here in the Northern Hemisphere, anyway. In honor of the seasonal upswing–and to celebrate April’s Arbor Day and Earth Day–we’ve collected here the best new nature books of the last few years.

The titles are loosely arranged in reverse chronological order of U.S. publication, going back three years to 2020, with the most recent new books coming first.

A few trends are evident: Climate change remains a perennial topic of interest, with books looking both to the future and the past. Recent science has uncovered some startling evidence to support the idea of consciousness in plants and trees. And several of the books here remind us that nature remains a source of solace for our own reckless species.

If you’re looking for specifics, you’ll find books on wolves, mushrooms, koala bears, coral reefs, hawks, falcons, deep sea creatures, and Nick Offerman.

Scroll over the book cover images below for more details and add anything interesting to your Want to Read list.

Thaizi Ono Great list Cybil :)

There is a book that I read when I was a teenager, Ismael by Daniel Quinn that it still resonates in me. The publication date of Ismael is 1992 and back then, sustainability was a topic people were talking about.

Loved this part - "A few trends are evident: Climate change remains a perennial topic of interest, with books looking both to the future and the past."

Added two books of this list to my WANT TO READ pile.

Samantha Taylor Silent Earth by Dave Goulson is a good read.

Teri-K The Hidden Life of Trees: What They Feel, How They Communicate: Discoveries from a Secret World by Peter Wohlleben was the best book I read in 2022, out of several hundred, including tons of fiction. It's that amazing. You'll never look at a tree the same way again.

Pers Oof! I've now added half a dozen of these to my Want to Read list (and I already had 2 on there anyway!). One I've already read - Raynor Winn's The Wild Silence. (I can recommend her latest, Landlines, too.)

message 18: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Good to see Frieda Hughes' "George: A Magpie Memoir" on the list! I'm currently reading it right now and so far, so cute, intimate and interesting!
