45 Book Titles That Offer Something 'Old' or Something 'New'

Posted by Sharon on December 14, 2022

Out with the old, in with the new! In honor of our civilization’s extremely annual New Year tradition, we’ve put together another title-theme collection, this time around zooming in on the terms “old” and “new.”

These title-theme exercises can be pleasantly surprising. They’re fundamentally arbitrary, but they always seem to generate interesting contrasts. It’s a kind of lateral thinking, like sorting your bookshelves by size or color, just to see what happens.

Where else can you find Charles Dickens shelved next to YA vampire short stories? Or stylized detective novels next to John Irving classics? Maybe you’ll find American historical fiction, or Indian murder mysteries, or delicious behind-the-scenes gossip about late-night comedy. Bonus points: Can you spot the oldest book on this list? (Hint: It was first published in 1939. Click here for the answer.)

Hover over the covers to learn more about the books below, and don't forget to add what catches your eye to your Want to Read shelf!

Olive Using The Shipping News was a bit of a stretch, but I suspect if they didn't it would have just been a sixth New York title. I'm really just nitpicking - it's an interesting idea for a list, and a fun mix of books.

Karin Just finished a german book Das Leben ist auch nur ein Wolke by Kristina Moninger. It is about trauma, loss, coping strategies and finding a way back to solid ground. Rather grippingly told. Now I am looking forward to A Christmas Mystery by Charlot King, because I'm feeling like Christmas and love nice and cozy mysteries esp. when it snows outside. It does here.... snowing.
