Your fellow Goodreaders who have successfully done the Goodreads Reading Challenge over the years have shown us several ways to help you reach your goal. Here are some of the best tips:
- Push yourself, but be realistic. Avoid the dreaded reading slump by committing to an achievable goal. You can always increase the number of books later. (Yes! You can always change your goal during the year. This is meant to be a fun way to motivate yourself, after all. No pressure from us if you need to adjust either up or down.)
- Trying to figure out a goal? Use the calendar as a guideline: 12 books (one per month), 24 books (two per month), or even 52 books (one per week).
- Get scientific: Check out this expert advice on how to develop a reading habit.
- Remember, this is fun! This challenge is all about what you want to read. But don't take our word for it: See what several of our very bookish Goodreads members have to say.
Boost Your Progress
- Rereading counts! So by all means, go ahead and dive into those old favorites.
- Listen to audiobooks. This is a great way to read more and multitask.
- Put books on hold at your local library so it's easier to start your next book.
- Use your Want to Read shelf to help keep track of what you'd like to read next.
- If you’re an Amazon Prime member, there are multiple ways you can read free books as part of your membership! You can read for free with Prime Reading (available in the U.S., Canada, Brazil, the U.K., Germany, Spain, France, Italy, India, Japan, China, and Australia). Or, check out First Reads to get one free, pre-release Kindle book a month (available in the U.S., U.K., and Australia).

Find More Books You'll Love

Good tips, they will surely help reach my goal this year despite all the new challenges that have arisen. Thanks for the motivational message.
I set my goal the same as last year! Which is 500 books. I ended 2020 at 626 books and just finished #18 for this year.

Don't be hard on yourself, we don't all have the same 24 hours! Last year I finished 100 too, and I count that as a pretty big accomplishment for the handful of hours I have each day. We have different jobs, lives, families... someone working as a book reviewer naturally has more time to read than most people do. :)
I’m hoping to read 60 books this year! I’ve begun listening to audiobooks this year so I’ll at least be able to get to fifty books, which is twice as much as I read in 2020
Happy reading year to everyone!! (❁´◡`❁) My goal of just 15 books looks so meagre compared to the majority here.. Σ(〃▽〃٥) Some of you are amazing readers!
It makes me want to increase my goal, but I always want to do so many other things it's just not possible for me in the little free time I have left.

You're an amazing reader, too! Any reading is awesome :)
I’ve signed up and set my goal. I’ve just finished my first book but it’s not showing in my challenge but. Any help?

It takes a while until it'll show up, but it'll be there, don't worry! (❁´◡`❁)
Clare wrote: "I’ve signed up and set my goal. I’ve just finished my first book but it’s not showing in my challenge but. Any help?"Did you set the date on the book? If it doesn't have a Date Finished set, it won't show on the challenge. It could also just be GR acting weird. :D
I set last years goal at 18 ( an ambitious goal for me ,with my tons of non pleasure work reading keeping me from just reading for enjoyment :-) I made the goal! Wish I was a faster reader as it is so enjoyable to read just for pleasure :-) This year going for 20. The goal setting is really motivating. I marvel at how some of you all can read so many books in a year! You are an inspiration.
Everyone is different and I think it is amazing that we can all challenge ourselves. I have tried to push myself a little more each year. Good reading everyone!
I finished 2020 with only 21 books out of my goal of 64. This year, I've set my goal at 50 and have completed four so far. Here's to a new year of reading whatever makes you happy!
50 books this year. I deactivated my social media accounts only so I'll have more time and be able to focus on reading entirely. I hate wasting time in stupid things especially toxic people :) so yeah more books and less humans.
Went for 30 books in 2020 and ended up reading 53 books thanks to the You-Know-What :') Going for 30 again this year, but won't be surprised if it would be a repeat of last year lol
I know your News focuses on recently published books, but I was wondering if once in a while you could run an article on discovering older books, like “Best books of the 19th century”, or “best books of the 1920s”I read my first book by Edna Ferber in 2020 and I wish I had found her sooner!
Do you ladies count audio books? I dont have much time to read between three kids and work but i try to listen to audio books as much as possible.
Tiffany Quillin Do you ladies count audio books? I dont have much time to read between three kids and work but i try to listen to audio books as much as possible.Yes, they count :)
Hi, I'm a German living abroad, but care for reading books written in the German language.Unfortunately, I don't find in your advertisments any information how to order such books, if any, and get it to my Amazone Kindle E-book.

My target in 2020 was 100 books but I ended up reading about 204 books or so. This year 2021 is 200 books and so far I have read 15 books and counting....😁
I set my goal of 30. Last year I set it at 25 but read 30. This year I'm setting at 30 and hopefully go over!
A warning. 2015 I read 50 books and 2014 I read twenty something books. Now they are removed! Check your challenge story. Last Year I read 16 books and Goodreads listed 18. When I Contact GR customer service I get now rep,y. No wonder people stop using GR.
This year I've listed 40 books, 5 more than the last year.
I've set my goal at 55, and I have already read 9! I have discovered kindle unlimited and I am drinking books!! 😂Nights are really the only time I have to read, so I am not getting much sleep lately 😜
I put only 12 for the year, but I know I can change the number during my reading so... 1 per month for a start :)Happy reading to you all!!!
I went for 24 books last year and easily exceeded that. I read 71 books in total.
So this year I thought I would try for 36 and see what happens....
Don’t forget to see if your Public library offers access to ebooks and audiobooks with Overdrive and/or Hoopla! All you need is a library card and PIN and it’s FREE
Set goal of 15 which is how many I finished last year. Been listening to more audiobooks so maybe I’ll surpass it.
Robin Loves wrote: "I set my goal the same as last year! Which is 500 books. I ended 2020 at 626 books and just finished #18 for this year."500?! Wow!
Mariangel wrote: "I know your News focuses on recently published books, but I was wondering if once in a while you could run an article on discovering older books, like “Best books of the 19th century”, or “best boo..."Ooh, that would be great!
If you want a good 19th century recommendation, I recommend Wilkie Collins! I really enjoyed The Woman in White and The Moonstone.
Going for 1,300 this year after completing 1,214 last year! Here's to good health and happy reading!
