Getting the Word Out: How to Approach Book Marketing to Actually Reach Readers - Part II

As we're getting ready to talk about book promotion for writers at the AWP Conference, we asked our panelists to share their thoughts and tips ahead of time. Find the first part of the series here, where we asked a publisher and agent to share their advice about acting authentically on social media and building networks and communities.

In the second part of our two-part series, learn how to work with your publicist and why it's important to take care of yourself above everything else while promoting your book.

"Keep a list of ideas for potential essays, Op-Eds, or short stories that are related to your book, and start drafting them at least six months before your book's publication date, preferably longer. The lead time for print magazines is long, and you might have to submit to a long list of online venues before you find the right one. Ideally, you'll place a few things leading up to your book's publication, and few after it. The more time you have to do this, the better.

Share your good news (within reason)! I often hear debut authors, especially women, expressing hesitation or embarrassment about sharing their rave reviews, interviews, whatever. It's important! We toil for years and years to write our books and they deserve the best chance to be celebrated. It's not only acceptable but necessary to celebrate our successes, which are often very far between. It's good to model that for other writers. That said, everyone does know the friend who posts so many times per day that you have to mute them on social media until their book excitement passes. Be judicious and conscientious about not churning out ceaseless self-congratulations. There is a threshold.

Don't say yes to everything! It's okay to say no. It's important to say no. A lot is asked of writers when their books are published. It's tempting to try and do it all. But, you can't. You do not have endless resources of energy and must weigh the value of time spent against potential benefits.

So, consider each yes. Is there a built-in audience? Good. Will it reach a different audience for your work than you already have access to? Good. Does it sound like fun? Good. Getting burnt out is bad for your book. It makes for lackluster stage presence and interviews. Better to do fewer things and do them enthusiastically and well. You are your most valuable resource. Take good care."

"Collaborate with your publicist to aggressively pursue those 'off the book review page' opportunities to find alternative ways to generate buzz and exposure. Share ideas for your campaign with your publicist as well as relevant media contacts you're acquainted with that might be willing to help generate attention for your book. Work with your publicist to tease out the main ground your book covers, especially those points that connect to topics that are a part of a larger national or cultural discussion. It's always beneficial to think of the niche audiences and start building interest at a grassroots level.

Reinforcement across multiple platforms is key. The more active you are in leveraging your own network - among acquaintances, on your social media accounts, through your website - the better.

In cases where events are pursued as a part of a campaign, work with your publicist to be as strategic as possible in your efforts, by taking advantage of your already established connections with various literary communities and or engaging with local venues and bookstores that work hard to promote their events among their constituencies."

E. Scurry Certainly appreciate the article, but when there's advice like, "Collaborate with your publicist to aggressively pursue those 'off the book review page' opportunities to find alternative ways to generate buzz and exposure." is just too vague to be helpful.

Something helpful would be to actually give examples of what this collaboration might look like. It would give examples from the person recommending it that specify what some alternative ways to generate buzz have been for her and her clients, preferably based off of her experience. Examples give us concrete things to consider and compare. I'm use to generic advice from usual search engines, and was looking forward to more meaningful articles from Goodreads.

Again, I appreciate the effort though. Would love more examples and such in the future. Thanks again

Hi E! Thanks for the feedback. All of the panelists gave more detailed advice during the panel they were on at the AWP conference over the weekend - this article just hit upon some of the larger takeaways for those who couldn't make it - but I'm happy to share some of the stuff since I was the one moderating!

"Off the book review page" means outside traditional book review sections, since many media outlets have reduced their book review coverage and the competition for those spots is fierce. Come up with timely Op-Eds you can write or newsworthy activities you do (I see you're an award winning poet - is there something to explore along those lines, perhaps?) to create other media coverage opportunities for yourself other than the traditional reviews. If you don't have a publicist working with you, throw ideas around with a friend. Explore local angles (does your local paper know they have an award winning poet in their town that they might want to do a profile piece on? Maybe ask if they'll include your poems once a month?) as well as your university connections. Hope this helps!

Jessica Greer Thanks for your question, E. Tara Scurry. These write-ups from panel contributors were shaved down to meet space requirements but I’m happy to try to offer some clarification! To echo Cynthia’s response, “off the review page” coverage would be comprised of media coverage for a book other than straight book reviews. That may consist of online and print Q&As, excerpt or ‘adapted’ excerpt placement, opportunities for authors to write original pieces that dove-tail in some way with topics that are woven throughout their book, features and profiles, inclusion on seasonal or themed ‘round-ups’ from outlets etc. You can try to place these in niche curated outlets whose focus align with the themes or genres your book explores, whatever they may be. For example, an author of mine, who recently wrote a beautiful literary fiction novel, in part about the experience and burden of shepherding an aging parent through the last stage of life while coming to terms with her own aging, had a Q&A run on the wonderful literary site, Literary Hub. Work with your publicist to brainstorm about your back story and the experiences that informed your writing – that may lead to the placement of an original essay, op-ed or online Q&A, tied in some way thematically to your book. That groundswell of niche coverage then can be used as a ‘peg’ to generate more interest, eliciting the attention of reviewers, editors and producers alike. Hope this helps.

I was thinking the exact same thing when I read the article. Also, what about us indie authors who doesn't yet have a "publicist"?

Kim Peripherally, the new structure of the Goodreads giveaways program makes it more challenging for me as an indie writer to find a readership that wouldn't hear about my work any other way. That's unfortunate. Putting books in the hands of people is something I'm willing to do if I don't go deeply into debt to get there.
