“True to form, ‘Gesceap’ is a complex layering of dub, electronica, rock, and jazz that immediately gives your eardrums a pleasant sonic reckoning.”
— Vulture, on ‘Gesceap”
“Of all the possible Tortoises, it’s especially wonderful to have this one back, sitting tall in the saddle.”
— Pitchfork, on “Gesceap”
“Jazz-inflected and imbued with elements of rock, dub, and ambient electronica, their music has, for the better part of 25 years, remained wonderfully inscrutable. The same is true of the band’s forthcoming full-length, The Catastrophist, which might actually be their most weirdly adventurous to date.”
— Stereogum
“The group's first single "Gesceap" embodies how the commissioned suite turned into The Catastrophist as swerving, 8-bit-like synth melodies build over its eight-minute runtime toward a cataclysmic finish.”
— Rolling Stone, on “Gesceap”The revered instrumental group Tortoise have spent 25 years making music that defies description. While they have nodded to dub, rock, jazz, electronica and minimalism throughout their acclaimed and influential album discography, the resulting sounds have always been distinctly their own.
Tortoise will return with the release of their new album, The Catastrophist , next week. The highly anticipated record has already received praise from the likes of Pitchfork, Vulture, Stereogum, Mojo, and Uncut.
Ahead of its release, The Guardian has an exclusive advance stream of The Catastrophist which you can listen to below. Recorded at John McEntire's famed Soma Studios, it is an album where moody, synth-swept jams like the opening title track cozy up next to hypnotic, bass-and-beat missives like “Shake Hands With Danger,” a cover of David Essex’s 1973 radio hit, “Rock On,” sung by U.S. Maple/Dead Rider’s Todd Rittmann, and the bittersweet soul ballad “Yonder Blue,” sung by Yo La Tengo’s Georgia Hubley.
