First Line Friday – Cursed Blood

FLF-BlackGoing back to the first of the Grimwood books for today’s First Line Friday. Zel and his tower were so fun to write. (And for those wondering, it’s HIGHLY possible you’ll see Zel and Geneva again.)

“There’s another one coming, boy. Get the shovel.”

Zel stilled at the old lady’s words. He hated when she spoke to him. Nothing good ever came of it.

He wished. He wished. He wished he was tucked away in his room at the top of the tower. He’d pry off the loose board covering the window and look out across the dark forest. From there, he could see farther than he’d ever been allowed to travel. He could see the moon rise and the sun set and the trees growing free beneath the sky.

She never went to the tower. Not anymore. Not since he’d grown tall enough she feared he’d hurt her if she got too close.

She was right to think that.

He no longer sat silently when she came to snip locks of hair to use in her foul potions. He didn’t let her near him when she came with her sharp knife to spill his blood.

He didn’t know what she did with the pieces she stole, what darkness she brewed in the stone walls of the main house. He’d tried to find out once and been beaten for it so badly he still carried the scars on his back.

He didn’t know. He only knew he was as trapped on the cursed plot of land as the rabbits he caught in snares for supper.

Zel has lived his entire life within the confines of a square mile of the forest. The tower is his refuge. The witch, his captor. Forced to do her bidding, he dreams of a day when he can leave the cursed place and be free.

But fate has other plans and freedom can take many guises.

As a girl, Geneva devoured stories about the wild boy who lived at the highest point in the forest. A changeling, a prince, a forest spirit—all the tales tell a different story. Imagine her surprise when she stumbles across the cursed tower and the young man held prisoner there.

It’ll take all her cunning and courage to free him.

What she doesn’t know is that freeing him might doom them all.
