Why Do You Review?

For me, reviewing is a way of sharing my thoughts about a book I had strong feelings about and connecting with people who share that same passion and drive when it comes to reading and literature. It is also a means of escape. When everything seems to be going to hell in a hand basket, it's nice to have someplace that I can call my own, where I can share my thoughts about the thing I love most with the people I like.

Why do you review? And what made you get started?

Carmen I like to talk about books and have book discussions. A book club meeting once a month is nowhere near enough for me. GR is a godsend.

It's really hard to work a book club into a busy schedule too. :/

Carmen That's true - GR is 24-hour 7-day-a-week book discussion on tap. :) Excellent.

Nenia Campbell I love that I can use it on my phone (I think a Smartphone was one of the best purchases I ever made). It's so helpful as an author to be able to answer fan questions and concerns while I'm rocking the day job (but only during breaks and lunch, ofc).

message 5: by Carmen (new)

Carmen LOL You rock that day job, girrl! :)

message 6: by Bess (new)

Bess I like to share my feelings about the book even if I am not good about it. But to express to the author the his/her work is worth. And of course talk with the others about it. Sometimes i dont feeling writing bc sometimes is too much.

Yeah, there have definitely been times when I was just too conflicted about a book to review it.

Reviews have so much value, though. They help other readers determine whether a book is right for them, and, as you said, they can help the author by providing feedback on whether a book is worth its price.

I love reviews, personally. Good and bad. They help my sales, and help show me whether I'm doing a good job or not.

Susie I love writing about my own personal experience with a book, plus interacting with others. Discussions are great, and sometimes I prefer them if others disagree, as it can create interesting points where you have to recall specific details to form and discuss your arguments... Of course, it's only fun until others get rude!

message 10: by The Book Queen (new)

The Book Queen I'm not very good at writing reviews; for some reason I can't put my thoughts down on paper (or the internet). But I love reading other people's reviews. They're always so helpful.

message 11: by A.M. (new)

A.M. I rely on other people's reviews to decide if I will read a book or not. If there is one that I love and adore, then exactly as if I was face-to-face, I want to tell people about it. OMG you MUST read this!

So true! It's all fun and games until someone decides to get rude. But I love discussions--sometimes people bring up really great points that cause me to look at a book in a new light.

I really like your opinions--at least the ones you've shared in our discussions--and I think you are selling yourself short in your ability to write reviews. ;)

EXACTLY. Oh my God, the other day I was like STEELHEART. BRANDON SANDERSON. HNNNNGGGG!!!

I don't often fangirl, but when I do, I go balls out.

message 15: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa J. I review books precisely to show people my opinions about books. Also, I love to analyze things, and reviews are the perfect space to do so.

What made me get started? I guess it was last year when I read a book I totally swooned over and I wanted to let people know about my love for it.

Aww, that's the best!

Jess ❈Harbinger of Blood-Soaked Rainbows❈ Honestly, I started reviewing on here because I worked part-time as a freelance copywriter, writing copy for companies' websites and print marketing materials, and GR gave me an opportunity to write about what I loved most and was a way to hone my writing skills so I could get more gigs (cause you know, practice makes perfect). Later I made amazing friends and use my review space as a way to connect with them as well as a way to practice writing. Sometimes I just need a platform to get my own feelings out, even if no one is reading what i have to say.

That's so cool, Jess. What an awesome job. Do you like it?

I've made some wonderful friends here too (you included), and reviewing is definitely a wonderful way to practice writing without worrying about being graded or evaluated. ;)

Jess ❈Harbinger of Blood-Soaked Rainbows❈ I actually stopped doing it a few years ago when I went back to school....I just dont have enough time. The work was ok, it depended on the company.....sometimes it was hella boring....particularly when I was hired by holding companies who owned several smaller companies.

Exactly! I miss seeing you on here as much.....my life has been a little nuts, and I'm assuming work is kinda crazy for you huh?

message 20: by Nenia (new)

Nenia Campbell Work has been CRAZY! I mean, I'm super grateful for the hours because it means that they like me and think I'm doing a good job, but sometimes I come home and I'm too tired to write or clean or do anything but sleep, and that can be frustrating from a creative standpoint.

I'm sorry to hear that--but school does come first. Have you thought about tutoring? I earned some money that way in college. I tutored research methodology, neuroscience, and English. :)

Jess ❈Harbinger of Blood-Soaked Rainbows❈ I was asked to be an anatomy tutor last year but my school is a good 40 minutes to an hour away from where I live and the pay wouldnt have been worth all the extra driving back and forth.

Right now I just cook for a living which is nice with school because i can kind of set my hours to be flexible with school and go in to the restaurant as often or as little as I need. I get burned out like you, but it will be worth it in the end.

Aww, thanks! I generally just spill my thoughts onto the computer and post them, even though they're incredibly cluttered.

Like A.M., I find other people's reviews incredibly helpful when deciding what to read. But I also review because I love discussing books with people and I've made a few really good friends on here just because of that. It's lovely having 'book people'.
