One Minute Meditation – A View From A Dana Farber Window

Snow DayOne  Minute Meditations is an ongoing series of short videos, poems, and commentary intended as a meditation.  Offered as an opportunity to step back from your cyber routine and settle into a more natural rhythm, if only for a minute.

A View From A Dana Farber Window

There’s  something about sitting in the cafeteria at Dana-Farber Cancer Center that holds melancholy, hope, and a deep connection with reality without any sense of contradiction.  All around you sit people and their families who are near death, but at the same time fully alive.  Conversations put off are had. Reflections on what’s important come into sharp focus.  And sadness is deeply felt in the way that we humans are meant to experience it.  The rain dripping down the Dana Farber window reminds that this is just as important . How can a place that was built to deal with everything going wrong, so perfectly show us everything that can go right.

I’ve been coming here for the past month to bring my father-in-law for a stem cell graft and all the follow up appointments.  So far its been a success. Today we heard the news that he could travel home to Maine at the end of the week.  Ours is just one of the stories unfolding in this chaotic cafeteria.  I hope you don’t ever have to visit this place. But if you do, know that many happy stories have played out here.

So take that minute to meditate, uncover yourself from the detritus of your self centered mindlessness.  Remember that everything about us is temporary and that everything is precious.  Immerse yourself in this sacred moment.  Make yourself ready for receiving whatever today shall bring – be it life or death.
