Another Christmas Memory

I can't write about one set of grandparents without writing about the other set; Dad's parents. My grandfather's family came from Italy. I'm not too sure where my grandmother's family originated. Her heritage was made up of many nationalities, and although she passed away when I was young, I do remember some things about her.

She always baked pies and cakes from scratch. She also made the best French toast. I remember staying at Grandma and Grandpa's and having tea and French toast for breakfast each morning. (I'd stay a week with them at a time.) She's who I get my love of tea from. And then she and I would each call our moms for a chat before we went about the day's business.

Every Christmas, she'd ask my brothers, sister and me what we wanted for a Christmas present. One year, when I was about six, I wanted one record in particular--the fourth in the Partridge Family series. I had their other albums and took those to Grandma to show her what I had and to point out on the back cover of one what the fourth album looked like. This album was very exciting to a six year old, because it came with a shopping bag. (Little did I know the bag was plastic and similar to what we get in the grocery store today.) Grandma didn't drive, but she promised to do her best when she and Grandpa went shopping.

Christmas morning came. My brothers, sister and I opened our presents at home and then we dressed and prepared to go to Grandma's house for dinner. (Each year, we rotated between our house, Grandma and Grandpa's house and Aunt Linda and Uncle Carl's house for dinner.) I couldn't wait to get to Grandma's and see if she'd found the record. Low and behold, Grandma did not disappoint. She'd found the record and I was excited, to say the least. But the thing I remember most about that record is Grandma saying how many stores she'd searched before she'd found it.

I only had a few more Christmas' with Grandma after that before she died. And while I can't recall too much about her, I do remember she was kind and warm and loving, in that special way all Grandma's have. She took time to play, to hide Easter eggs and to make our Christmases truly special. I do miss her and wish I'd had more time with her, but I'm truly blessed for the love and time she gave me and for having known her.
