Conlang help!
Help! I need invented languages! Well, not me, but a friend. It’s for a PhD dissertation on invented languages in fiction. Totally legit!
In her own words:
I’m looking for professionally published works of speculative fiction (SF, fantasy, alternate history). They don’t have to be novel length — short stories would work as well. Overall I’m analyzing the balance of implicit versus explicit exposition in these types of stories, particularly in those that acknowledge untranslatability. For example, one work I’m using is “The Gaslight Dogs” by Karin Lowachee.
Here are some more examples:
THE SPARROW by Mary Doria Russel (words are explained as they become clear to the narrator)
ONE NIGHT IN SIXES by Arianne “Tex” Thompson (words are usually explained in internal dialogue)
CREST OF STARS by Hiroyuki Morioka (words are just there and you have to figure them out from context)
ANATHEM by Neal Stephenson (dictionary entrees at the beginning of each chapter, plus context)
THE FAMILY TRADE by Charles Stross (whole paragraphs of conlang appear with no explanation other than the reactions of the characters)
Do you have any suggestions to add to the list?
