#PitMad; or, An Ode to Twitter

I didn’t know quite what to think of Twitter, at first. I’m not the greatest with social media. My Facebook account is personal, not professional; it’s primary function is to help me keep up with friends and family. My blog languishes for month-long stretches between spurts of activity. Even here on Anxiety, I often don’t manage to compose a post before Monday evening.

Twitter? How was that going to work for me?

The answer turned out to be: pretty amazing.

Through Twitter, I’ve had awesome, if short, conversations with amazing authors, editors, and agents. Bill Willingham doesn’t remember me from WFC 2012 in Toronto, but all is forgiven because he wrestled a bear for me.

Don’t ask.

But the greatest part of Twitter is the constant connection to this fantastic and diverse group of creators.

The awesome creative energy of the NaNo community? It’s that, year-round.

Then, come to find out, it gets even better: #PitMad or Pitch Madness: a day of pitching (completed and polished) stories in 140 characters or less. If an agent favorites your pitch, it’s an invitation to submit the  story. Speed-dating for agents and writers in the technological age! Just remember to check the agent’s Twitter feed for specific submission guidelines.

The usual caveats ensue: do your research; know if it’s someone you want to work with. And for the love of all, don’t pitch anyone on Twitter outside of these events or a specific invitation. It’s the online equivalent of following the agent/editor/writer to the bathroom and pushing your manuscript under the stall door. Just don’t.

The next #PitMad round is June 4. I can revise and polish the Damned Novel by then, right?

So, who’s with me?
