HabitRPG: My Writing Productivity Godsend

About a month ago, Kate told me about this thing a friend told her about, and did I want to do it? That thing was HabitRPG and the answer was yes. HabitRPG is an app and a website that lets you customize and track your productivity as though you were playing an RPG. You get gold and XP for completing your to-do list and as you level up you gain skills and cool gear, and you can collect pets to train into mounts. If you are at all into RPG’s, you should check it out. If you’re at all into needing accountability, you should check it out. If you’re a write, you should DEFINITELY check it out.

Why? Because you can customize your writing goals and productivity and keep on track. The app (the website works better than the phone app at the moment) lets you put goals into three different categories: Habits, which are always visible and you can do whenever you want, dailies, which are visible on the day you’re supposed to do them, and To-Do, which are one-time activities that disappear when you do them. So far I’ve put things like brainstorming and plot outlining in the to-do column, and a word count goal in my Habit column. If you’re trying to get yourself into a writing routine, say 500 words every MWF, you could put “Write 500 words” in your daily column and only check it on MWF.

What’s even more fun is if you don’t complete your dailies, you lose health! Nooo! And until you do it, you can’t check it off for gold and XP and potentially finding a pet. See how easy this is? And fun? You’ll be writing your 500 words MWF in no time.

On a more serious note, last month was very hard for me. I’m struggling with unemployment and some health issues, and without HabitRPG I wouldn’t have gotten anything done and might’ve slipped further into a depression. It sounds like a silly little thing, a productivity app, but for someone who needs to be reminded to clean the litterbox everyday because she’s too sad to get out of bed otherwise, it can be a real lifesaver. I wouldn’t have gotten anything done otherwise, but I managed to do yoga 26/31 days of the month, among other things I wouldn’t have expected!
