Timely Itch to Write
I now read a lot of blurbs every day. My days are packed full of blurbs from children’s books to scientific theory.
And, every day, I get the itch to write at 10:30 am. It’s clockwork. Read a catalogue or two of blurbs for books that I can stock in the store. Get empowered to write my own stuff. Take a break and write it down.
Sometimes I am inspired by the titles of books. One, The City When it Rains (a mystery by Thomas H Cook if you are interested) made me itch to write poetry about, well, a city when it rains.
Other times, I realize what is really important to a book buyer when looking at an author bio (where have you written, where have you been published, where do you live, what awards have you won or been shortlisted for?). That gives me ideas about how to tighten up my own.
Sometimes, I read blurbs and say, “Okay, if that can get published, I can get published.” Followed by, “Dammit, I had that idea, too!”
Other times, the juxtaposition of pages gives me ideas for characters (like the person who put a dubious rationalizing-the-abuser book beside a BDSM erotica. Twice. In the same catalogue).
But by 10:30 am, I have the itch to write. Always with bright, new ideas.
