When your ‘Children’ are no longer ‘Childish’

An old picture illustrating my mother teaching us siblings

From left “Taqi, Ameen, Kakak, Mama, Ahmad”

“Ameen! I would like to give a brief advice since you will become a husband and soon a father” Mama breaking the silence.

It is nearing her son’s wedding.

——————

“So cute!” said Abah.

“Love his cheeks! His laughter! Everything about the little boy!” replied Mama.

Mama added “At this age is the sweetest. Always innocent. Not much hassle.”

Her hands played with the one year old neighbor’s baby boy, Afiq. His chuckle is always melting.

“But…” Abah continued. But he paused.

Mama seems to understand what Abah was about to say.

When they were gifted with a new born, life was heaven. Their marriage was just nearing a year, still in the honeymoon period, is lighten up with a new member in the family. Family gathered, pictures were taken. Everyone was happy.

That was all a sweet memory.

But now, they have become parents to five children, life has changed.

Children, when they were innocent infants, they are cute. But when they have grown up to kids, with their constant screaming, running, destroying of household appliances, sibling fights, sibling rivalry, the title ‘home sweet home’ is no longer applicable. Exhaustion from work doesn’t stop at home. At home, they have to face the unpredictable-naughty demeanors of little rascals who were once cute angels!

Oh the love of their ‘childishness’ is different than the love of a ‘child’?

Being fond of their cuteness, adoring their childishness is the liking of their innocence. Their cute part, the part we like to play with them and how they respond, the part where they make cute gestures in front of the camera, the part they chuckle. All of them are cute memories.

But when we have agreed to be good parents, we cannot be parents who adore their cuteness or childishness only. We got to love them even if their childishness has diminished.

Love of children, is unconditional. Love them when they are cute, love them when they are brats. Love them when they smile, love them when they cry. Love them when they are silent, love them when are being a peevish youngster. Love them when they are win a medal, love them when they are rebels.

How many years shall they remain as infants?

As they live, they shall remain cute. They still are ‘childish’.

They are still ‘childish children’, even when they are toddlers.

They are still ‘childish children’ when they are adults.

They are still ‘childish children’, even when they have become parents themselves.

That is why, it is important for parents to be educate their children in line with the age level. Dealing with an infant is different than dealing with an adult. Good or bad, your children are still your blood. To be happy when children do wonders is easy. But to accept them when they have done a serious mistake in their lives, maybe many parents fail this.

Never stop praying.

Children shall never remain childish.

They will grow up eventually.

They will test our patience.

How will we respond?

Naturally they will be our source of happiness. But the sky isn’t always bright right?

And those who say, “Our Lord, grant us from among our wives and offspring comfort to our eyes and make us an example for the righteous.”

Al-Furqan: 25: 74

After a long session with mama, Ameen expressed his gratitude “Thank you mama for the advice.”
