The Aftereffects of 20-sen

Petrol price hike

It is almost impossible not to realize the hundreds of cars at petrol stations in line to isi penuh before the 20-sen drama reach its peak mid-night.

Those who chose to grab the chance, rich or not, are motivated that they will save worth of ringgit however much for days to come. And those who stayed at home, regardless of their social status, just would prefer to enjoy teh tarik at home unfazed with the hike rather to be squashed up.

The rakyat’s worry is not only the petrol hike but the chain of hike that follows – price rise in other basic needs. Not to mention the excuse for sellers to purposely charge higher than the market price just because semua barang naik.

This after-effect drives the minds of the rakyat to gain monetary possessions. Everyday talks are about how to raise more and more money. Money, money and money. Money becomes the central focus.

Millionaires seek ways to save their gold mines from depleting but ‘forget’ donation.

Disabled beggars keep on flooding the streets using their disability to gain monetary aid and do nothing but that.

Ministers claim to use more money, higher education budget to improve the system but have the system improved?

Capitalism seems to shed light, as it brings out the creativity in people, but it denigrates their minds.

Even rich people who own millions feel insecure of their money, prompting them to invest more, to gain more and more money.

What wakes the rakyat every morning?

Money.

What motivates the rakyat?

Money.

When the only motivation is money, there will be more people working night and day as Karl Marks put it “Wage Slavery.”

The rakyat today ignites their cars at dawn around 6.30am to avoid traffic congestion.

They punch-in at 9am, lunch break from 1pm to 2pm and the most awaited moment is to punch-out at 5pm. But they cannot go back home just yet because of after-hour congestion.

So they wait until 8pm and maybe and just maybe if the traffic has subsided then it is smooth sailing. But if there’s an accident on the road or on the other lane, then a sudden congestion shall occur.

Five days a week from dawn to dusk. From dark to dark they work. Friday night is the moment they long and Monday is the day they hate.

The two days off; Saturday and Sunday are needed to rest, to recharge the exhaustion of five days.

Karl Marx cites Linguet in the Theory of Surplus Value, Chapter 7:

“In suppressing slavery, no claim was made that either wealth or its advantages were suppressed…  It was therefore necessary that things should remain the same except in name, It has always been necessary for the majority of men to continue to live in the pay of and in dependence on the minority which has appropriated to itself all wealth.  Slavery has therefore been perpetuated on the earth, but under a sweeter name.  Among us now it is adorned with the title of service” (p. 462).

Yes. The “Wage Slavery” is debatable. It cannot be looked from only one side of the coin. The system has brought happiness to people who cannot afford anything but only to makan gaji.

Who here wishes to not makan gaji and aspire to build their own empire of promoting goodness? Instead of five days a week working to quench the thirst of the minority, they use the time to organize youth related programs, to feed the poor, to help the needy, to be with the people educating them.

Medical doctors always give advice of “we are what we eat”. Our body will grow out of what we eat. It’ll be a part of use in time.

The society today is rife with negativity. Dramas about gangsters, ghosts, cheap comedy, Suamiku this, Suamiku that. “We are what wee see.”

Who here wishes to change the media? To change the surrounding to ascertain what “we see” is nothing but good?

To produce quality alternatives?  To become full time speakers, activists, public intellectuals, writers, thinkers, youtubers, film makers? To fund their own selves along the process? To anticipate bankruptcy but to keep on doing good for society?

If we are too busy with money, when will be the time to think about revolutionizing the education system? The time to reach unity in diversity? The time for family? The time for political tolerance? The time for racial tolerance? The time to get to know our neighbours?

No time. We have no time.

Because we are too busy making sure tomorrow we have money.

Because the system wants us to be busy with money.

I do not have an answer.

Please enlighten me.
