Are you flattered by words?

I've always understood flattery to be an insincere lavishing of praise, trying to please someone for a reason. Perhaps I'm not taken in by flattery because my first language is not English, Swedish or Finnish, it's Deep Heart. I enjoy the truth more than compliments if the compliments are just flattery.
