A few thoughts on BURNED (SPOILERS abound)

First, I want to say thank you to all who’ve written to tell me how much you loved BURNED. I love hearing from you guys, getting to meet you at events and am eternally grateful for your support. It means the world to me that you love the characters and come along for the ride with me every time!

But...I’ve also heard from readers that think BURNED isn’t the book I wanted to write. While I hate taking time away from wrapping up FEVERBORN, this mistruth needs to be tended to and disposed of.

BURNED IS the book I wanted to write. To those who felt so much disappointment with where the story went in this installment that they feel the only possible explanation is that I didn’t want to write BURNED the way I did, or I wasn’t in love with the story and following my muse—that’s not true. You didn’t like it. And that’s okay. But it’s not because I don’t love the book. I do.

I didn’t succumb to pressure from anyone, fans or publishing folks, to change my story after ICED. If I made any mistake at all it was in proposing the next three books while I was getting divorced and not taking the time to write a full outline. I pitched one book and stated “plus two more”. Because I’ve been with my publisher for as long and successfully as I have, they accepted it that way. Then, as I began writing ICED, I realized I had some problems to sort out, like: who the hell is going to narrate when Dani becomes Jada? There was also the larger problem that Mac and Barrons’s story had to unfold alongside Dani’s. I couldn’t keep them offstage that long. My mistake: I didn’t see it going in. A bigger mistake would have been to stick to a bad plan just because I made it.

A few say there’s talk that ICED wasn’t well received so I was pressured by my publisher to change the story to ‘appease’ fans. Neither of those assertions is true. ICED was well received by an enormous number of readers, in fact it’s the best reviewed book of my career, and over the past two years has sold very well. My publisher and I are extremely happy with it. If I’d wanted to appease fans with a book, I know how. I did things in BURNED that I knew would upset readers. The goal isn’t to make readers mad, there’s a purpose and that’s simply where the characters and story are right now.

If you think it was hard reading Mac feeling lost and uncertain of herself now that she’s no longer the MVP and has something brewing inside her that terrifies her—it was even harder writing it. It was similar to slogging through her eternal grief at the beginning of SHADOWFEVER. I began to wonder if it would ever end. Yet in the overall story arc, her grief, like her loss of direction right now, had and have purpose. You may not like or even see that purpose, you may feel strongly that I should have written it a different way. You may feel strongly that I should stop writing Mac. Or stop writing Dani. Neither is going to happen.

I follow my muse and my muse put Mac where she is at this time for reasons. I understand that those reasons are not apparent to others because only I know where the story is going. And I can see how that’s hard for the reader.

To those who were upset with what happened to Dani, it WAS foreshadowed in ICED. Dani was always going to go through those silvers and come back older. And as someone else. Jada was there in my head all through ICED, talking in the background, fighting to come out. I adore Dani. It kills me to see her contained in any way. But Jada is only a prelude to the real Mega. I always intended to give Dani to the reader (and hopefully make you adore her)—then take her away in this brutal fashion. The only concession I made in BURNED (and I said this last year) was making Jada 19 instead of 17. Was that because people complained? No. 17? 19? Not that much difference. In terms of freedom with her sexuality, a subtle nuance. It made writing her more interesting to explore and I need to be utterly riveted by what I’m writing.

Was there controversy over Dani’s age in ICED? Sure. There was controversy over Mac in DARKFEVER. There was controversy over the rape in FAEFEVER. There was controversy over the end of DREAMFEVER. There’s constant controversy because my books end in cliffhangers. If I were interested in stopping controversy, I’d stop writing cliffhangers. Hell, I’d go back to writing my stand-alone romance novels

My publisher has never tried to control my writing in any way. They make soft suggestions and if I tell them no because I have a plan, they trust me. I’ve been with Random House for fifteen years, and my current editor for the entire Fever Series, and have never had better champions.

If anyone thinks that writing the Fever books has been easy, I can tell you it’s been a battle every step of the way. First with the readers who wanted me to continue writing stand alone romance, then with my publisher when DARKFEVER sold badly for the first year or two. Then with my publisher when BLOODFEVER sold badly. They, too, suggested I go back to writing what we knew sold: stand alone romance novels with happy endings and no cliffhangers, new couple each time. I just kept saying: wait. I know what I’m doing. And they waited. And they—and you—trusted me. I finished the series and you guys took SHADOWFEVER straight to number 1 on most lists in the country. I’m incredibly proud of those five books.

I’m also incredibly proud of ICED and BURNED. I’m not saying that because I ‘have to put a good face on things.’ I don’t have to do anything I don’t want to do. That’s a rule I live by. I can’t wait to finish FEVERBORN and FEVERSONG, bringing the second story arc that was always coming, to the resting place I need it to achieve.

Voltaire says writing requires a certain complete self-renunciation and self immersion. It does. I do it for me. By myself. To satisfy my muse, my artistic drives and desires. I offer it to the reader and when I’m lucky and all the stars line up—they love it. And when I’m not, they don’t. But reader response will never change the story I’m writing for this reason: I’m not writing my stories to be rich and famous. That was never my goal. I’ve been blessed enough in a challenging field to be fairly successful. But that’s icing on the cake. The cake is the writing. I write because I have these damns stories in my head—and half the time I don’t even understand why I’m so obsessed by them. I write to get them out. And I love it when the readers get it, when they see the intricacies of the web I weave, when they fall in love with the characters I love so much myself.

But when readers don’t like one of my books—accusing me of not having written the book I wanted to write because they didn’t get the book they wanted to read is not only absurd—but not true.

At the end of every writing day, I answer to one person: the bitch muse that drives me bugfuck. She is the only one who must be obeyed.

But back to the happy stuff: thank YOU for reading my books, for feeling passionately about them, for loving to hate and hating to love the people I can’t stop thinking and writing about. At the end of the day, I feel I have the best job in the world and can’t wait to see what tomorrow’s writing brings. That’s the feeling I live for, and you guys make it possible!

Fiona Please don't feel the need to explain.
Mixed feeling from me, but loved it it still. The ones complaining a lot of the time just seem to want a one off book to make them happy, patience is needed with this series. Individually some of the books were frustrating but as a whole I loved them - I explain to people I introduce to the series that it is a journey and the first 5 books are really just one long epic book, you have to be in it for the long haul.xoxo

Bonnie Love the series, love your writing. I'll probably read anything you write!

message 53: by Sarah ♥ dog crazy ♥ (last edited Feb 16, 2015 05:36AM) (new)

Sarah ♥ dog crazy ♥ As long as the Fever series doesn't turn into romance, I'm happy. So hopefully there will be no more couples besides Mac and Barrons. That way we can get all the other really interesting stuff.

message 54: by PuPilla (new)

PuPilla Burned was perfect as it was, keep it up the way you did so far. I can't wait for the next episode! :))

Sheyla ✎ I love Burned!! You gave us so many answers and now I have a million questions. LOL .

Krystle ~A Booknatic~ Holy shit lady, you go girl! I've been a fan for years, and I will continue to be a fan. YOU are the MEGA where I am concerned, and I adore all of your characters. Like you said, we should and need to trust you with your writing because you do know exactly what you are doing. I have no problem what-so-ever with cliffies, because I know that in due time, we will have a resolve and fall in love with your next book. Hugs girlie, haters gonna hate, but 99.9% of us love ya! =)

message 57: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne I loved the book But I did want more romance in it for Barron and Mac, Plus I hated the cliffhanger ending.

But I do love you and can't wait to get the next book.

Im happy Mac and Barron get to stay in are lifes.

God bless Keep writing

message 58: by Susan (new)

Susan H I love your books & this series especially.
Screw the naysayers. I may not be thrilled where some of the characters are right now, but I respect that it's a process ... this series is about more than the ending, it's a journey.
I need more Lor!

Wrap up Feverborn, please ... I'm DYING here!! Lol

message 59: by Addie (new)

Addie I have to be honest.. I did not enjoy Burned. Not at all. Mopey Mac is unbearable. However, I know you have a plan and that you'll get where you're going. I was just left wishing I had waited to read it until the next book comes out so I could have gotten to the good stuff. It was soooooo much setup with little to no payoff. It felt like a bridge. I think it was harder to swallow because it took 2 years for it to come. Hoping the next one comes quicker. Please? Because despite not enjoying Burned, I still love the characters - and you as a writer - so much that I can't wait to see where it goes. Thanks for this post!!

message 60: by Kat (new)

Kat Never give up; never give in. You don't and your characters don't either. Reading each of your books and their characters is a study in HOW TO WRITE CHARACTERS. They are deep, humanistic and face dilemmas and choices that I (and obviously many others) find intriguing and exciting. My personal peeve is these 'e-authors' that churn out 170-200 pages with absolutely no character nuance or world building. Gah. Love you, love your energy and style. Rock on. Warmest regards.
Brenda V.

Natalia If anyone asks your my favorite author and this is my favorite series, but I hated burned you ruined Dani, who was my favorite character until you pretty much killed her off and replaced her with Jaida. I'm bitter and will probably continue to be for a while. That's my honest opinion.

But I wouldn't un-write one word of it.)

Annette Miranda i absolutely love your books, i find myself drawn in, caring for or wondering about each character. giving us more background on what's going on in their heads, what's said behind closed doors, what's done behind closed doors makes each character and every event that much more and sometimes creates as many mysteries as it solves. i look forward to your next book, hopefully books, as the world and it's characters continue to change and evolve!

message 66: by Jenn (new)

Jenn I've bought the books but I'm kind of holding out on reading them until they're out most likely because I don't want to be on that how could she do that to us bandwagon over a cliff hanger ending. I might cave and read before that because they look really interesting but probably going to wait so I can read them all at once. Anyway I think it's awesome that you posted this and that you write for you not to please someone else.

message 67: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Karen you are amazing! Thank you for listening to your muse and providing us with these amazing stories. I've loved them all and I can't wait to see where you'll take each one. It's never where I expected, instead it's always a million times better. You have an amazing talent and I'm so glad you don't listen to the haters!

message 68: by Samantha (new)

Samantha Thank you for writing ALL of the Fever books, they have become my favorite series of books, & I read a lot of books so that's saying something. That being said, I was so looking forward to the release of Burned. I had very much enjoyed Iced & was excited to see where you were going to take Dani & Mac's stories.
I have to sdmit that I was pretty disappointed after finishing Burned, it felt like it was written as a way to tie up loose ends & right mistakes that may have been made in previous books. After reading this blog I think I was kind of correct in my thinking. The problem with this for me was that it was disjointed & repetitive. How many times are you going to have Mac doubt Barrons? I really hope you're done with that one.
The one thing I did like was The Dani/Jada story line. I wish we could have had more of that instead of all of the whiney Mac stuff. I did see that one coming & am looking forward to hearing about what happened to Dani while she was in the silvers.
Amazon shows that you have another book coming out in the fall, I'm hoping it's better than this last one. Though really that wouldn't be too hard to do, thanks again.

message 69: by Darlene (new)

message 72: by Laura (new)

Laura I have loved every one of your books they have ALL left me panting for the next one you publish from the the very first one I picked up off the library shelf I didn't even know your writing then , they have enthralled me,kept me up at night to finish and then made me wait for the next hoping the story would never end .

message 73: by Liz (new)

Liz I have mixed feelings about Burned. I had no problem with Jada, in fact I saw it coming in Iced and it makes sense that someone who has had to deal with so much would develop a coping mechanism like her. My problem is with Mac, I was over the moon that Burned was in Mac's pov but where was strong Mac? I understand she is going through a lot so she is confused, sad, lost etc. But I feel we are back to Mac 1.0. All that amazing character development seems to be erased. However, I trust you and I'm still going to continue to read, hoping we get back an even stronger Mac.

P.s I'm also upset about not getting any new sex scenes with Mac and Barrons but that's just because I'm a horn dog lol

message 74: by Joanne (last edited Feb 16, 2015 08:17AM) (new)

Joanne Douglas Never listen to what others complain about unless it's constructive criticism. And even then only when it suits you. This is your story and it's written the way you intend it to be written. I personally love the conflicts. Do I always like where they go, no but it's part of the story that you are writing and I stand by what you write. I might not always like where it's going, but always I like the story in whole. Keep up the good work Karen Marie Moning. You are a wonderful writer and my favorite author.

message 75: by T. (new)

T. Birmingham Karen,

I was actually waiting for you to write this! I loved loved loved Burned! I actually wrote on Amazon that this book reminded me of when every reader was complaining about the first half of the series and the struggles Barrons and Mac were going through. You told us to be patient. You told us there was going to be a happy ending. Well, I can totally see how much you love these characters, and I don't think you can give them anything less than a happy ending. You go!

Angie Bee It absolutely breaks my heart that you have to defend yourself this way. But I do understand both sides of the coin as a passionate fan and you the artist. You're the only one that knows how the story ends. I'm just here for the ride. When I open your books, I don't judge. I enjoy. It's like falling off a cliff, knowing that you'll land safely and have one hell of a story to tell. I sang your praises to everyone I know. Even to fans on fb that are looking for a new book to read. Karen just be true to yourself and stay to the light.

LMAO about wanting sex scene with Mac & Barrons. My editor pushed me hard to give the readers one...said she wanted it and so would they. I told her she had to wait for it in FEVERBORN because when I write those two f@cking it needs to be specf@ckingtacular with intense emotional undercurrents and the opportunity didn't meet my criteria in BURNED. But it's coming...:)

message 80: by Irene (new)

Irene Thanks so much for taking the time to comment. We love to hear from you and love the amazing journey Iced and Burned is taking us!!!

message 81: by Latoyia (new)

Latoyia Well its nice to hear from you and not just your staff members. I will openly say I am one of the readers who felt like you were pressured into writing Burned this way.

As you said Iced was a great book and you just went left with Burned. Believe me when I say we were well aware of the foreshadowing of Jada. I think what we don't understand is why 90% of the book is in Macs point of view. When you have now created a main character with a split personality.

I will no longer be of the opinion that you were pressured into writing this book this way. I will say that this came from you 100% and of all your books this is the one I don't like. This is the one I would not recommend to people when asked. They deserve to read your better works.

message 82: by Liz (new)

Liz W Thank you for writing this and I am sorry that it was even necessary. I have been a huge fan and admirer since keeping up the first Highlander novel. I have seen many of the people personally attacking you and have been aggressive in my stance that this is your story and you have the right to tell the story as it's presented to you and that anyone that doesn't like it should find a new series or better yet write one themselves.

Please continue to dazzle us (your fans) with a writing style that just sucks us in and turns us Priya for the next books!

message 83: by Amanda (new)

Amanda Fuck the people who judge. You have a always asked for us to have faith in this journey and have never let us down.
In fact, Burned had been my favorite book so far! It's amazing to even say that after the brilliance that was Shadowfever, but it's completely true.
I felt that I had a deeper look at all the protagonists, especially Barrons, because he had so much more dialogue...and truth, not speculation.
I have complete faith in your journey and my only complaint could be that I want the next book out sooner.
Your vision continues to impress, and I've never doubted that you're going to the exact places the story should go.
Keep being you and close to the stand what you believe to be right. I will never question it.
Much love,
Amanda

message 86: by Yanli (new)

Yanli It makes me so happy that the book has filled your expectations. (For me, the book was bored, too much)
Although I like Mac, I know that she still has history, I liked that. But she was digressing tooooo much, over and over and over again, (and that), was what bored me to death. For me that was a disappointment, because after waiting sooooo much time the book, more than 50% of the book made me sleep. :(

message 87: by Cathy (new)

Cathy Karen, I too love your books and enjoyed Iced and Burned and all the books of the fever series. Can't wait to see where the story is going. You write like no one else and have such phenomenal developments in your stories. You should never be taken to task for that. Keep on doing what you're doing.

message 88: by [deleted user] (new)

Thank you Karen for taking the time to explain that you wrote the book your creative inspiration and bitch muse demanded you write. I KNEW that's what you were doing and could not, for the life of me, figure out how some people could have been so arrogant to presume they knew what was going on in your life, with your publishers/editors etc., when the only one who could possibly know that was the person living your life-- YOU. I love your stories, no matter who is narrating, or where they lead, because even if I hate what's happening at the time, I get why it had to happen in the grand scheme of things, once I reach the conclusion. Thank your for sharing your stories. I can't wait to read what happens next.

message 89: by Jen (new)

Jen I have been a fan for a very, very long time and I love all your books. I especially like the character crossovers (the MacKelters) as I love the Highlander novels. I thoroughly enjoyed Iced and Burned and only hate the ending because I want to know what happens next!! The cliffhanger makes me excited for the next book, even if I am impatient. But thanks, Karen, for what you do, the characters and stories and everything you have given us, your readers, for over a decade.

message 90: by Yodamom (new)

Yodamom KMM, You rock them out every time ! The Fever series just happens to be in my top 5 series to read, re-read, listen to and dream on. I loved Iced, loved Burned and can barely keep hold of my sanity while waiting for the next book. I love all the characters, write your story and I'll be there.

message 92: by Amberley (new)

Amberley Bennett I was introduced to the Fever Series by a friend and at first I didn't have high expectations as I've read a lot of paranormal romance/action. I tentatively started reading Darkfever on the morning of my day off....the whole day went by and I had only moved off the couch for toilet breaks and cups of tea. When I find a book I love I become obsessed and I was so happy that there were 7 books for me to devour. I adore Mac and was not disappointed that her POV returned for Burned, I could see KMM's vision couldn't sustain Dani as a permanent POV as it would have limited the story. Mac has her fingers in all the pies and spends her time pissing everyone/thing off so in my mind she's ace and I'm following her, she's where the party is at!
I can't wait to see how the second story arc unfolds, seeing as Dageus was my favourite of the Highlander Series (The Dark Highlander) the cliffhanger at the end of Burned was right up my alley. Keep on doing as you do KMM, I'm trusting you to finish this with as big a bang as you started it!

message 93: by Sara (new)

I just don't want the Fever series to end, EVER!!!
Please give us hope that there will be more after "Feversong!!!"

message 99: by Victoria (new)

Victoria YOU are the writer.....if READERS don't agree or like where ANY of your sagas are going then they can go and TRY to write one themselves......see how far they get in the writing process....NOT very far I think. EVERYONE has ideas swirling around in their brains, but that doesn't mean it can be successfully translated into a whole novel or series of novels. As Taylor Swift song goes "The Haters gonna HATE HATE HATE....I'm gonna SHAKE SHAKE SHAKE SHAKE it off ". YOU are obviously doing what you love ( even if your muse is making you bugfuck crazy !!! LOL ). Keep writing and I along with many others will keep reading !!!!! :)
