Addition by subtraction (two days later)

"My girlfriend dumped me," Emu announced to the group.

"You don't sound sad about it," Michaela said.

"I thought I would be. She was smoking hot, really smart, a little bit trampy, and she came from money."

"Good thing you escaped," Liam said, a quizzical look on his face. "She sounds like every young man's nightmare."

"She was also self-centered, over-bearing, and really judgmental. And shallow."

"Like they say, you don't know what you have until it's gone. Sometimes that's a good thing," Liam said.

"What are you smiling about?" Ann asked me. I hadn't realized I was smiling.

"Sorry. I was off thinking about a girl who dumped me in college. She told me how I was supposed to feel about it, and what I should tell people about the breakup. As she was talking, I went from crushed to relieved in about a minute."

Today I will remember, sometimes losses are really gains.
