Burnished feathers brushed along the ground as Nock approached the Forge’s guests. He didn’t stop until he grasped Tamaes by the forearms. “Much time has passed since your last visit.”
With an answering grip, Tamaes smiled wryly. “I stopped growing.”
Nock’s brothers caught up. “Growth has little to do …”
“ … with stature. You have …”
“ … changed. And with each change …”
Baring his fangs, Nock’s voice boomed as he finished, “ … true friends will take your measure.”
Taji cheerfully interrupted. “Are you taking volunteers?”
Tamaes turned to find him, Bern, and Jacinto with hands upraised.
