ARCs

I received my shipment of a dozen ARCs (Advanced Readers Copies) from DAW last week and I've been busily disseminating them to people who would like to have a copy or have made significant contributions to my career. ARCs are uncorrected reader's proofs, designed to be used for promotion and reviews in advance of the book actually hitting the streets. These ARCs are in a trade paperback format, while the actual book will be coming out in hardback on February 3rd, 2015.

Among the ones I've sent out so far are to my friend Tony Daniel, an awesome SF writer in his own right and currently an editor for Baen Books. Tony was very influential in my career early on, providing advice and insight not just on the craft but on the business.

I also sent one out to Justin Barba, who runs MISCON in Missoula, MT. If you've never been and you're in the general area, MISCON is delightful. It happens every Memorial Day weekend and it's loads of fun. Highly recommended.

Also on the list is my friend Steve Mancino. Steve worked for my agent Joshua Bilmes, at JABberwocky for a couple of years. He had first crack at IMPULSE, back when it was called REUNION DAY, and Joshua picked it up from him after Steve left to explore other business opportunities. Steve's back in the agenting business now and we're all glad to have him back. He's been a good friend and he knows the business, and what sells. Steve is currently working with The Booker Albert Literary Agency.

I'm sure I'll be giving one to the programing director at Orycon 36 in Portland, OR, next weekend, and saving others for people as I think of them. ARCs are the first form of your novel that you can put your hands on, and as such they have some special meaning to me, and I hope for the people who receive them.

It's all fun from here on out.
