IMPULSE Is Coming!

So I've decided it's time to start my Goodreads author blog. This seems like a very good place to connect with both readers and writers, so I look forward to the exchange.

I'll be using this blog mainly as a way to connect with you, keep you up to date on book news, and of course offer giveaways and contests, so that should be fun!

To start with I guess I should catch you up on what's going on with IMPULSE and the rest of the Lightship Chronicles series. It's 5 months to my release date (February 3, 2015), and I'm currently about halfway through page proofs on IMPULSE. They're due in to DAW by October 17th, so it looks like I'm right on track. It's amazing how many things you still want to change even if your book has been through multiple iterations and edits. But hey, we're writers, right? We change our minds. I'm looking forward to bringing IMPULSE to the world and I hope you like it when you read it.

STARBOUND is the second volume in the series, and I'm happy to report it's been drafted and sent off to my agent, Joshua Bilmes, for his commentary. I love this second book, love getting to stretch the story out free of some of the character-building you have to do in a first novel. And of course there are twists and turns, a betrayal or two, and some very surprising romance moments. Things will not be dull for our young hero, I guarantee that!

Once Joshua gets me his feedback on STARBOUND, I will likely make a round of changes, which could take a few weeks to a few months, and then it will be off to DAW and my editor Sheila Gilbert. From there she will have comments, and well, we will go around again. My hope is that STARBOUND will be off to Sheila by the end of the year, and maybe scheduled for later in 2015, but no promises on that front.

After I finish the page proofs for IMPULSE, I'll get back to outlining the third volume, which now has the working title of DEFIANT. I've worked out an ending that would be a slam-bang climax to the series, but I'm backtracking from that, feeling that there may be much more story and adventure to mine before we get to that BIG ENDING. I'm enthused right now about my writing, so continuing on with the story seems like the right thing to do.

As we get closer to the publication date for IMPULSE, there will be giveaways. Oh yes, there will be giveaways. I will have a couple of ARC's (Advanced Readers Copies) to put up first, then eventually the published book, which will be coming out in hardcover. Also, as we get in to 2015, I'll likely have a giveaway for my YA novel SPEEDWING. More to come on that later.

Looking forward to the journey, and talking with all of you here as we go.

Best,
db

Three Books

IMPULSE, STARBOUND, and DEFIANT

Yes, updates on all THREE books. IMPULSE is in the proofing stage at both DAW here in the US and Del Rey in the UK. Both of them had small clarifications required this week and I've made those calls. Also found out that IMPULSE will be a mass market paperback in the UK, while it will be in hardback here in the US.

STARBOUND is still with my agent (Joshua Bilmes) and until I get his feedback nothing will be changing on that manuscript. I did discover however that several minor characters who had been killed in Book I showed up in Book II. Oops! Notes were made and corrections will be done at the next go-round.

And DEFIANT. Yes, DEFIANT is a thing. I started writing an outline, then a scene, then another scene, and now it's at 6,000 words and that makes it official, I've started Book III! I like the outline so far, and the scenes, and trust me, adventure and hijinks will ensue, the only question is when.

STARBOUND will undoubtedly require more work, but for right now I'm using my abundance of creative energy to bang out some words on DEFIANT. I think it's gonna be fun to write!

ARCs

I received my shipment of a dozen ARCs (Advanced Readers Copies) from DAW last week and I've been busily disseminating them to people who would like to have a copy or have made significant contributions to my career. ARCs are uncorrected reader's proofs, designed to be used for promotion and reviews in advance of the book actually hitting the streets. These ARCs are in a trade paperback format, while the actual book will be coming out in hardback on February 3rd, 2015.

Among the ones I've sent out so far are to my friend Tony Daniel, an awesome SF writer in his own right and currently an editor for Baen Books. Tony was very influential in my career early on, providing advice and insight not just on the craft but on the business.

I also sent one out to Justin Barba, who runs MISCON in Missoula, MT. If you've never been and you're in the general area, MISCON is delightful. It happens every Memorial Day weekend and it's loads of fun. Highly recommended.

Also on the list is my friend Steve Mancino. Steve worked for my agent Joshua Bilmes, at JABberwocky for a couple of years. He had first crack at IMPULSE, back when it was called REUNION DAY, and Joshua picked it up from him after Steve left to explore other business opportunities. Steve's back in the agenting business now and we're all glad to have him back. He's been a good friend and he knows the business, and what sells. Steve is currently working with The Booker Albert Literary Agency.

I'm sure I'll be giving one to the programing director at Orycon 36 in Portland, OR, next weekend, and saving others for people as I think of them. ARCs are the first form of your novel that you can put your hands on, and as such they have some special meaning to me, and I hope for the people who receive them.

It's all fun from here on out.

Orycon 36 Report

Orycon 36 in Portland, Oregon was this last weekend and it was a lot of fun. This was my first time paneling with an actual book (ARCs of IMPULSE) and it seemed to make a big difference. The book cover feedback was very positive. I was a bit worried about the reception as the cover is a purple/lavender color, not your typical sci-fi colors, but it was well received and a couple of people even went out of their way to mention how much they liked it.

I met some cool new writers and caught up with some old friends, including Bryan Thomas Schmidt (@BryanThomasS), Artist Jeff Sturgeon, Scott James Magner (@SJMagner) Wendy Wagner (@wnwagner ), John Pitts (@JAPittsWriter ) and Jennifer Brozek (@jenniferbrozek).

New writers I met at the parties and panels include Annie Bellet (@anniebellet), Fonda Lee (@FondaJLee), Curtis Chen (@curtiscchen), Bryan J. Hunt, and Vanessa MacLellan (@McCVan). Sorry if I missed anybody!

Several of my panels were packed and it was great fun and good info was exchanged. Hope everyone had a good time!

IMPULSE Review From The Sci-Fi Chick

http://scifichick.com/2014/11/18/scif...

Review:
Impulse is an exciting space opera that fans of Star Trek will enjoy. The story is set so far in the future, that a lot of the politics and technology is foreign and mysterious. With plenty of suspense, drama, unique technology, and romance – this scifi adventure has it all. I thoroughly enjoyed this romp through deep space from relatable characters to the clever plot. I look forward to many more stories from this new author – and Peter’s further adventures.
