Betwixt and Between
When I walked into the group room, I was stunned to see Liam there.
"I thought you were in Europe, becoming a wine connoisseur," I said.
Liam stared at his shoes for a long moment before looking up. "I scared myself with my drinking over there. I had my first blackout. I thought I was in France until the guard said something to me in Spanish."
"What did your parents say about your escapade?" I asked.
"They sent a car to get me. When I got back home, they laughed. They said I had to learn to stay put when I was drinking. My dad was glad I took the train instead of driving."
"So you got drunk, got on a train, and ended up in a Spanish drunk tank?" Ann asked. "Sorry I missed it."
Liam said, "I can't live in Europe with my parents. I don't feel at home, clean and sober here in Pittsburgh."
"You're not alone," I said. "Make any major change in life, and you're bound to feel betwixt and between for a while."
"'Betwixt and between'!" Michaela said. "My grandmother used to say that." She rolled her eyes, Ann and Emu laughed.
"I know what he means," Liam said. "I don't feel comfortable in my own skin right now. Next he's going to tell me I will feel at home again in time."
"Give it time," I said.
Today I will accept making a change usually means accepting feeling betwixt and between, at least for a little while.
