Strange

When I walked into our office suite the next day, Patty The Office Manager Who Really Runs the Site had a strange smile on her face. “Good morning!” she said with a lilt to her voice.

“What?” I asked. “What’s up?”

“Oh, nothing’s up,” she said her smile broadening. “It’s just that Ken’s off all week.”

The Other Ken-I was hired first and considered myself the only true Ken- was on vacation. So what? “And?” I asked.

“And so is Josh,” Patty said. Josh was an evaluator who worked in our site two days a week. I still couldn’t see what was so amusing.

“And?”

“And Steve will be tied up in Robinson all week.” Steve was the supervisor for our site and our Robinson facility.

That’s when it hit me, OMG OMIB. I was going to be the ‘only man in building’ all week. I would be responsible for observing the collection of male urine samples for drug testing. Five days of making small talk with somebody who had both hands full, one hand holding a specimen cup, me saying things like: 'How 'bout them Pirates?' or 'What's up with all the bear sightings in the city?' and hopefully not 'I can't believe you injected there!'"

Today I will accept that life can be pretty strange at times.
