Rebuilding

When I got home that night, I worked on dismantling my children's playhouse. It had started out as an out-of-box wooden set with a sliding board and three swings. When we replaced our deck, I used the old wood to enclose the area under the sliding board platform, add a room with a wooden floor, and put a roof over the entire structure. Later I added windows, carpeting, and curtains.

Tearing down the playhouse made me sad, but the kids had outgrown it. My daughter would be driving soon, with my son not far behind her. We needed the room to expand our driveway.

Just as I had worked to clear "the wreckage of the past," I accepted I'd have to tear down some of the present to build the future. I carefully removed every screw, bolt, and nail, trying to save as much of the wood as possible. I wasn't sure what I was going to make from that wood, but I liked the idea that some boards would be used for the third time.

Today I will build my future, accepting I may have to tear down parts of the present.
