Why Are the Vietmanese Slaughtering Our Rhinos?
Record numbers of rhinos are being poached and killed in South Africa for their horn. Many of those horns end up being sold illegally for their supposed medicinal properties - in countries such as Vietnam. Before 2005, rhino poaching losses in South Africa averaged 14 animals each year. Since 2005, the killings have surged and Vietnam has rapidly grown to be the world’s largest recipient of both legal and illegal rhino horn from South Africa. Vietnamese nationals have been heavily implicated in obtaining trophy hunting permits for white rhino in South Africa, and using the 'psuedo-hunts' as a means of exporting rhino horn to Vietnam. In 2013, The head of Vietnam's wildlife trade authority angrily dismissed accusations that his country is the driving force behind the illicit trade in rhino horn, describing them as "bullshit". He went on to blame China for the slaughter.
