Twisting

Twisting
It took two weeks for the judge to return our call regarding Michaela’s relapse. In that time Michaela never missed a day of treatment and passed all her drug tests. The team told the judge they didn’t think she needed to return to inpatient treatment. The judge said he would consider two weeks in the county jail instead.

“I can’t believe I’ve got this &^%$#@ hanging over my head!” Michaela complained in group. “Now I have a reason to drink.”

“Now you have even more incentive to stay sober,” Emu said. “If you relapse while the judge is thinking about sending you to jail, you’ll make sending you much easier. You have to stay sober.”

“I don’t need any incentives, I was doing fine on my own,” Michaela answered. “If I go to jail, I’ll have to leave Jayson with my mother. What if my dimwit ex decides he wants custody? He could use my jail time against me in court. How am I supposed to stay sober knowing I could have that to worry about?”

“If you keep relapsing he could use that against you whether you go to jail or not,” Ann said.

“You’re twisting all the reasons you have to stay sober into excuses to drink,” Julie said.

Michaela started to say something, stopped, then stared at me. I didn’t rise to her defense. “I hate my ^%&*@# life,” she said.

“Hate it, but stay sober,” I said.

Today I will not twist a reason not to drink into reason to drink.
