Rope tricks
Liam showed up a two weeks later to drop Ann off at treatment. I happened to be walking into the building.
“Hey Liam,” I said. “How are you?”
“It’s all good,” he replied. “In two weeks I’ve had three, maybe four, glasses of wine. I told you I wasn’t an addict.”
“I want you to know you’re always welcome back,” I said.
He smiled. “Still after my insurance money, Ken?” I shook my head, smiled back, and walked into the building. I hoped I was wrong, but I expected him to slowly drift back into daily drug abuse.
Today I will remember this:
sometimes the rope life gives us to hang ourselves is very long.
