"Mascis is now as skilled at quiet as he is with loud" [3.5/5 stars] -  Rolling Stone "On the sweet, shaggily swooning Tied to a Star, the jolts tend to come from the music's simple beauty" -  NPR Music “It makes for a more organically toned collection that proves the grey wizard doesn’t need heavy distortion to stay at the top of his game.” [8/10] -  NME

“J’s mature-era peak continues.” [4/5] -  MOJO “Subtle and understated, yet brimming with raw passion, this is songwriting at its cathartic, confessional best.” -  Record Collector “On his second solo record, Tied to a Star, Mascis molds yet another subdued prism through which to glimpse his rare genius as a guitarist and songwriter.” [8.1 /10] -  PASTE “There’s an earnestness and heart-on-his-sleeve quality that fills the album. The delicate beauty of “Me Again” and “And Then,” the meditative “Wide Awake” and the bright pop residing within “Stumble” find their melodic strength through the simplicity of Mascis singing and playing his way through his cluttered mind.” -  Relix “Full of sweet sounds and precise picking.” [4/5] -  Q Tied to a Star demonstrates that J Mascis’ songwriting doesn’t rely on volume but on his apparently effortless ability to write emotive music. “Sentimental me,” he sings on “Me Again,” but there’s more than sentimentality to these songs; they resonate at a more fundamental level.” [4 / 5 Stars] -  Music OMH "Lush, nostalgic folk-rock songs that sound completely natural coming out of him." -  Stereogum "The song offers up a pair of serene acoustic guitars which blast out some finger-picked beauty."
