Man, I so wish people were more honest with their reviews. I do a few reviews for a website and the book list is populated with some unknown/new authors so I pretty much take a chance when choosing a book from the list. I generally check other reviews to see what people say .... I don't know how many times I picked a book based off of positive reviews and then read the book. )It made me glad I didn't pay for the book sometimes.) I started checking only 3 or below reviews to see what people really thought about the book--most reviews above that are total cheerleading. I thought I might be too picky, but really .... It's my opinion: my reviews are not popular (since I don't do many and I don't really have many friends on GR), and I feel bad when I don't like the book very much so I am hesitant to post something beyond my rating.Long story short--I appreciate your honest reviews (even if we have different tastes sometimes.)
pps--wee for pain meds
I can see why, though. For some people, positive reviews are something that can be bought or traded for goods. Being on an author's street team, for example, gets you free books and bragging rights, so there's a lot of pressure--from the author and from other members--to rate the book with a 5-star rating.I'm the same way. I always filter out 1 and 2 star reviews because I'm very picky and I know that the things that other picky readers complain about are likely to annoy me as well (although not always).
I call them shill reviews--even if I ain't using the word right.I either read too much or there are a lot of bloggers out there with templates for their reviews.Soandso has done it again!
Look/watch out soandso, soandso is (insert whatever here).
I hardly give 5 star reviews, but I had to with this book.
The books in this series just keep getting better and better.
etc etc etc
It is scary how representative that is of most 5 star reviews. As an author, I must say that it is nice to get 5 star reviews that say those things about my work but it is nice to see WHY they liked my book for X reason just so I can do it again. Why is this book better than my others? What keeps you coming back? TELL ME HOW TO DO MY JOB
Most negative reviews are very specific, and if a lot of people are saying something is wrong with one of my books I try to avoid making that mistake again if I can. (Sometimes I can't. "I don't like Nenia's writing style" is kind of hard to fix LOL.)
*shrug*

Thank you! I feel the same way. It really makes me wish I could read minds, because I would love to see what makes people love the books I hate.
