Be Happy

I’m not sure why but there seems to be a lot of focus on happiness these days. It could be the Pharrell Williams hit or the “minion song” as my toddler has dubbed it. It could be a documentary I recently watched or all these post pregnancy surveys I have to fill out when going to the doctor so the medical professionals can make sure I’m not suffering from any post partum depression. Either way it is prevalent lately. Still, as we drove to and from San Diego this weekend, I couldn’t help but think that happiness is our one main pursuit in this short stint called life–although admittedly it comes in different forms for each of us.

The pursuit of happiness is nothing new, not even for our founding fathers. Despite this, it does seem that the state of being happy is something that is becoming harder and harder to attain. San Diego is beautiful and as we drove to Coronado, I couldn’t help but admire the houses and think naively that the people who lived in them must surely be happy because who wouldn’t when living in such a beautiful home in a little corner of paradise. Of course when I had the chance to pull myself out of the clouds, I realized that was a ridiculous thought and that while the truth saddens me, much evidence these days points to the fact that humanity, despite all we’ve attained and all we do, has never been so unhappy. If this really is the truth, that is unfortunate, but being the optimist I am, i can’t help but ask what we can do to change this course and be happy with less again? Thoughts? Please share them.

Happy writing this week!
