Don’t Get Comfortable
So, I have been working pretty much non stop lately and during this time I’ve realized something important.
You wanna know what it is?
All right, since you forced it out of me. Here goes … I was making a pretty decent amount of money off my books, enough that the bills were paid and we had a bit of extra. Well, over the past two years I made that amount almost consistently each month. And what do you think I did?
I got lazy.
I didn’t write as much because I was making about the same each month so, I could take my time, right?
No. No, no, no!
This is absolutely the wrong thing to do, especially as an indie author. Here’s the thing, it sucks to say but we indie authors are expected to put books out faster and closer together than the traditionally published authors. If we don’t put something out at least every couple of months, people tend to forget about us. Sorry, but it’s true.
So, here I was thinking I would be fine, taking my time on the books and then all of the sudden the sales started to drop and then drop even more, until I was making a quarter of what I was previously making.
I sat here and thought. What the hell is going on? But really, I knew what had happened. I got lazy. I got comfortable.
So the moral of the story here is this … Never get comfortable, always continue work. When one book is done, celebrate and then move right onto the next. If you are writing as a career, you know this matters. We are lucky to be doing something we love as a career, so don’t make my mistake. Keep going!
