Wit beyond measure is man’s greatest treasure.

When our kids were little, they loved Harry Potter, especially Ryan, who has the exact same birthday at Harry.

I never read the books because of reasons, and I only saw the first couple of movies, also because of reasons.

Recently, Anne and I decided that we would finally read the books, and we’re about halfway through the first one (I’m a couple chapters ahead of Anne, because I had some time on an airplane that I spent … wisely).

Yesterday at Wondercon, while we were walking to our panel, I told  Felicia that we were reading the books, and trying to describe to her how much I love them.

“I just … I really want to go to Hogwarts,” I said.

“They’re building one at Universal Studios,” she said.

We passed through a curtain and approached a set of large, closed doors.

“No, I don’t want to go to an amusement park recreation of Hogwarts,” I said, “I want to go to Hogwarts. I want to go to a train station, run though a wall to platform 9 3/4, and take a train to Hogwarts, where I will learn how to be a wizard. I want Hogwarts to be real.

I noticed that she’d taken a subtle step away from me, which was probably a good idea. I was getting excited.

“What house are you?” She said. Our escort opened the doors and led us into an enormous corridor that was over twenty feet high, equally as wide, and a few hundred feet long. Chairs were stacked along one wall, and the other wall had doors in it that granted access to the various meeting rooms where the panels were held.

“I’m pretty sure I’m Ravenclaw,” I said.

“No way, dude. You’re totally a Slytherin.”

“I am not a Slytherin!”

“Yeah, you totally are a Slytherin.” Felicia crunched up her nose and grinned at me. “My brother’s a Slytherin.”

“Dude, I’m going to be Ravenclaw … or maybe Gryffindor. But I really think I’m Ravenclaw.” Our footsteps and voices echoed off the cement floor and walls. I imagined that we were in a castle.

“I’m Ravenclaw,” Felicia said.

“When I get home, I’m taking the test at Pottermore, and I’m going to be Ravenclaw, too.” We arrived at the door for our panel, and waited while the panel before us finished up. We talked a little bit about what we’d make sure to cover on the panel, and I realized that the corridor we’d just walked down was perfect for riding a longboard skateboard.

The previous panel walked out, the room filled up with people who were there to see us, and after a quick Tabletop trailer, we went inside for our panel. It was great.

When I got home last night, I was too tired for taking the sorting hat test at Pottermore, so I took it this morning. I was honest in all of my answers, and spent a fair amount of time thinking about some of the questions. I wasn’t trying to get the house I wanted (and I don’t know enough about Harry Potter to manipulate the results, anyway), so I was incredibly happy (and a little relieved) when I found out that, yes, I was in Ravenclaw.

RavenclawI know it’s a silly thing, and I know I’m a little too old to really care about it, but reading Harry Potter makes me feel like I’m part of something that’s special, that means a lot to a lot of people.

And I know it’s silly to care about what house I’m in … but I’m really glad to be in Ravenclaw, because I have a lot of books I need to read.

Kayla The books are so much better than the movies! You'll get hooked after the first book. They are my favorite books and contain so many valuable lessons. Enjoy!

message 2: by Amber (new)

Amber The books are good and the movies are too. I always thought I was in Gryffindor but it is cool that you are in ravenclaw. :)

message 3: by Léa (new)

Léa I was so surprised and thrilled to get Ravenclaw on Pottermore (although I am also supposed to be too old to care) that I created another account to take the test again and was proud to get the same sorting twice. Yay 'Claws!

message 4: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer I'm also Ravenclaw. I was fairly certain I would be placed there though. If you weren't aware (I'm sure you are)there is a new site called hogwartsishere where you can kind of study the courses they took. Obviously no magic, but it's designed like taking an online course :)

Chester Dean It's so sweet you're reading Harry Potter and feeling the excitement I felt when I first read them when I was 16 (I'm 28 now). These books are perfect and I'm glad I grew up with them. You will love them all, The Prisoner of Azkaban is my favorite. Can't wait to read what you think of all the books.

PS: I'm Gryffindor.

message 6: by Britney (new)

Britney I was surprised that I got Ravenclaw in Pottermore. I always got Hufflepuff in every other quiz that I took so I assumed that I would be Hufflepuff. But I guess that's the difference between normal quizzes created by readers and a quiz created by JK herself.

I'm so happy that you're reading the books and enjoying them and getting to experience the in-depth world in them. My favorite book of the series is book#5 Order of the Phoenix. But if I were to give my reasons why I would be spoiling things.

I hope you enjoy reading the rest! ^_^

message 7: by Marielle (new)

Marielle I was so surprised when I was in Ravenclaw, I've always thought I was Gryffindor - but you and Felicia as housemates? I can totally dig that.

message 8: by Bas (new)

Bas Like your kids I grew up with Harry Potter and I still reread them once a year. Total escapism, love it!

message 9: by Selena (new)

Selena Oh so nostalgic. Huzzah for another Potterhead!

message 10: by Jessica (new)

Jessica I got Slytherin which figures because all evil masterminds have to start somewhere...

I too have never read the books but am absolutely obsessed with the movies. I foolishly thought that reading the books wouldn't be as satisfying because I have already seen all of the movies. I was appropriately reprimanded by my Potter loving friends and family and have decided when my daughter is old enough we will read them together....to be followed by an equally awesome Harry Potter movie marathon complete with snacks and Butterbeer (The non-alcoholic version of course).

message 11: by Jackson (new)

Jackson Radcliffe Of course, one of the key messages of the books is that it's our choices that count, not our abilities. Harry could have chosen Slytherin, but opted for Gryffindor. I may be taking this too seriously, but hey, not as seriously as certain people.

Sue Harry Potter has given me so much. I have friends all over the world because of Harry Potter. I know exactly what you are talking about, I want it to be real too. I'm proud to be a Hufflepuff. I watch the HP Alliance and see the wonderful things they do. I love Wizard Rock, with bands like The Moaning Myrtles or the Whomping Willows or The Butterbeer Experience. Because of Harry Potter I have an online family, it's given me more than I ever expected. I'm thrilled you are loving the books as much as I did.
