The above chart is from Smashwords survey on pricing.
Recently, I raised the price of my novella “In the Balance" from $1.99 to $2.99. I did this for two reasons:
1) At $2.99 Amazon changes the royalty rate from 35% to 70%.
2) This chart. Money aside, I want people to read my stories! This chart shows $1.99 as the lowest selling of all price points.
Still, I was afraid. But with encouragement from fans who told me it was worth $2.99 (thanks everyone!), I raised the price.
…and it worked. I’m not just selling more copies. I’m also making more money…but even if I was selling the same number of copies I was before I’d still be earning more.
I think $1.99 might be a good sale price, it’s the price Amazon uses for it’s ‘deals of the day’, but for normal business it looks like a no-go.
