While doing some research for a book, I found myself unable to remember what a fear of heights is called. Turns out it's acrophobia (which I have).
But, as often happens when I search for words, I found myself unable to stop.
First, I found phobophobia - a fear of phobias. Who knew?
Next I found arachibutyrophobia - a fear of peanut butter sticking to the roof of your mouth. I always thought that was kind of fun, actually.
Then there's odontophobia - the fear of teeth or of dental surgery. Is there anyone who
isn't afraid of dental surgery?
Or how about nyctophobia - a fear of the dark. I also have that - I'm beginning to realize I'm a bundle of irrational fears.
This one was interesting: novercaphobia - a fear of your stepmother. I just know there's a story in there somewhere (Cinderella, anyone?).
Another one that seems like a given: nucleomituphobia- a fear of nuclear weapons.
Thankfully, I don't have this one: logizomechanophobia- fear of computers.
I suppose using Latin root words one could come up with a phobia for just about anything. I'm not as sure one could come up with a person who actually has that specific fear. Then again, how many people (besides me) have a crippling fear of grandaddy long-legs spiders?
For the curious, more interesting phobias can be found
here.
