The late Baroness Thatcher often consulted Adam's The Wealth of Nations during her tenure as U.K. Prime Minister from 1979 to 1990. It's known that she always kept a copy of the book in her purse for that purpose.

Together, Adam and his friend and fellow economist-philospher David Hume essentially designed the framework of modern economics. As posited in his magnus opus The Wealth of Nations, Adam's description of the sources and effects of major economic phenomenon, such as classical supply-and-demand equilibrium, represented the first theories of economic modeling. Moreover, his "invisible hand" theory still prevails to this very day as the cornerstone standard of modern Libertarianism.

Founded in 1977, London-based Adam Smith Institute is a Libertarian think tank that continues to influence public policy decisions in the U.K. It was largely responsible for defining "privatization" public policy implemented by the Thatcher government.

After spending his freshmen and sophomore years studying at Columbia University, my grandfather Lowell "Bro" Outwater Collins (1900 - 1981) graduated from Colorado College with an A.B. degree in Economics during the early 1920s. A WWI veteran and one of America's first military aviators, he founded Founders Mutual Depositor Corporation, one of America's first "open-end" mutual fund companies, in 1938. Dreyfus Corporation (a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Bank of New York Mellon) acquired the firm during the late 1990s to manage "growth" investment portfolios.

Bro was a direct descendant of Quaker John Tripp, the so-called "Founder" of the Tripps of North America. He settled in Newport, Rhode Island, several years after immigrating to America from England during the early 17th century. His descendants are thought to number in the tens of thousands.
