Sarah Sundin I love "Oklahoma!" too - and I've never lived in the state :)

Yes, the men are wading. The water is extremely shallow for a long way out, and the landing boats couldn't get any closer to the beach. This is at Makin, but in the landings at Tarawa, this led to tragedy, as the Japanese mowed the Marines down in the water.
