Why We’re Moving to Hawaii
In early 2010 my wife and I took a delayed honeymoon to Maui, Hawaii. From the first moment we got off the plane, we were in love. Before I get into this, how are you doing? I’m writing this while enjoying some orange juice, grab something cool and lets talk about the why behind your dream.
What’s not to love about Hawaii? The weather is amazing year-round, the atmosphere is laid back and chill. The food is fresh and organic, there are fewer people, it’s like living in a small town surrounded by beauty.
These things are a strong motivator but living in Hawaii is expensive (not as expensive as New York or California). After getting back we joked about moving to Maui but didn’t take those talks too serious.
It wasn’t until my father died did the reality of time hit me and then us. Life is short but it’s not until you have someone close to you die, before you realize how short it is, it really opens your eyes.
At that point we had a revelation, why wait until we’re older and can’t really enjoy it as much? Why not make it happen now and fully live out the experience? From that point on we sought counsel and prayed.
Once we felt confident and at peace with the decision, we got to work planning on how we can make our dream our reality. On paper, the plan was solid and we were excited but you know how life can be sometimes.
Hitting those bumps in the road
It’s November, we have less than two months in 2013. Right about now you’re thinking about your goals for 2014 (I hope you are). No matter what your goals are, you’re going to hit some bumps in the road.
You know this, I know this, we’ve both experienced this, yet those bumps keep a lot of people from moving forward. What’s the secret sauce? How could Thomas Edison keep going after the light bulb failed so many times?
How could Dan Miller recover after a bankruptcy and start a moving that has lighten a fire under millions? How could Dave Ramsey? There are a ton of stories where entrepreneurs hit road blocks that seemed impossible to conquer, John Lee Dumas hears about them seven days a week on his podcast.
One of the best ways to succeed, to get back up, is to take your eyes off yourself and focus on your “why.” While moving to what some consider “paradise” was an amazing thought, the why behind what we’re doing is what has helped Tanya and I get back up after falling down hundreds of times.
We want a simpler, fresher, laid back, natural, active lifestyle and Hawaii is the right place to give that to us. We want untouched nature, waking up every morning to simply beauty. That’s what we want, for you it might be different.
What’s important is how strong your why is, how strong your image of that finish line is. If you don’t really know why you’re going through all of this “chase your dreams” stuff, your journey won’t last very long.
I’m preaching to the choir
Most of you who read my blog read other amazing blogs, so focusing on your why isn’t new. However, what really separates success and failure is more than knowing, it’s implementing and applying.
Practically, when you hit that road block this week, will you get super frustrated and let the depression keep you from working on your dream? Or will you take a moment, take a deep breath and pull up that image of you living out your dream? Will you take a moment to remember your why, get up and keep going?
It has to be more than knowledge, you have to live this out, we all have to stop giving in and throwing ourselves pity parties. Try this out, try to really hone in and focus on your why when you hit those rough days.
So I have to ask…. What’s your why behind your dream?
