A tourist in my own town

How often to we get so distracted by daily living, that we forget to actually live?

Only today I got this in an email from J.A. Rock: But how do you live right next to the Great Barrier Reef and never mention it?!

To which my answer has to be: Meh. It's some coral and some pretty fish. Seen one natural wonder of the world, you've seen them all.

Familiarity hasn't bred contempt, exactly, but it has bred a kind of shitty lazy attitude, and brings me, kind of, to something I was thinking the other day: Why have I never set a book where I live?

I live in tropical North Queensland, Australia. It has palm trees and oceans and reefs and rainforests and shit. People pay a lot of money to visit places like this. They buy postcards, and t-shirts, and, inexplicably, stuffed cane toads.

I think that it's about time I tried being a tourist in my own town, and saw it through fresh eyes. Because, guess what? It's kind of nice:

If you guys are wondering what brought this on, it's that J.A. Rock who is currently fighting the forces of Mordor in NZ, is heading to Australia in November. So yay!

I guess she doesn't just exist on the internet after all.

Also, I guess I should clean my house.

jules0623 I live a few blocks from the beach and rarely ever go. I have friends that moan about my lack of appreciation for what is a really great beach but I tend to forget it's there.

Then we were considering moving inland and I realised how much I'd hate living somewhere where I didn't see the water whenever I went downtown. Don't know what you've got until it's threatening to be gone, I guess.

Tara Spears I get that all the time too! WOW, you live in Seattle, how cool is that? Except I never go there, never go to the mountain only 30 minutes from me, and rarely go to the ocean. I've seen it many times in younger, more virile days. Now, I do go to the forests often, but then I have horses, and there is no better way to enjoy a day.

However, I am jealous. You live in the one place I want to visit before I die. But I suppose everyone lives in someone's one place...

It's crazy, right? I'm the same though. I can't remember the last time I went to the beach, but I'd never want to move inland!

J.A. Rock Yeah, Jesus, not to shabby looking, Lisa. Get ready to fall in love with it all over again when I get inordinately excited about all the pretty views, boats, hobos, etc.

Some coral and some pretty fish?? People sometimes see TURTLES there. Some people see stingrays. Some people see...*is so excited can barely say it* sharks.

Don't clean your house. I'll be scared and confused and won't know what to do.

Lol! I can take you to the aquarium -- there are sharks there, and turtles, I think. It's been so long since I went!

And then we'll go to Seattle and crash at Tara's place...
