Diarrhea Prevention - Reducing Diarrheal Diseases and Pathogens
Having suffered immensely with diarrhea in Africa and India, I personally know how painful it can be to have your stomach turned inside out. Thereafter pathogens can cause you to have hernias and more health problems. Thus I take the matter of diarrhea causes diseases very seriously.
To reduce such diseases providing better water sanitation is a great governmental and community wide action step which public and private sectors can collaborate to accomplish.
An action step everyone can take of utmost importance daily however is to thoroughly wash our hands and only wash food with clean water.
Dr. Bernard Keraita (University of Copenhagen, PhD) provided some excellent guidelines in his lecture I heard within a Global Public Health course.
1. Farmers should use mature manure (allowing five to six weeks of time for heating to kill most pathogens).
2. Only apply manure for fertilizer to the soil, not to the crops.
3. Forbid harvesters and traders from washing harvested vegetables with the local irrigation water, which causes crop contamination.
Washing should be done with clean water only.
Perhaps women are more inclined to think as mothers (or future mothers) acknowledging first and foremost what they can do domestically at home to safeguard their children and families. Thus washing hands and focusing hygiene are great steps. Men are more inclined to think outside the home (and engineering is a male dominated field) so naturally men are apt to think infrastructure and mention water sanitation systems
