LST-1 landing troops onto a beach near Salerno, Italy (US National Archives)70 Years Ago—Sept. 13, 1943: At Salerno, Italy, Germans counterattack down the Sele River and drive to within 3 miles of beach, paratroopers of the US 82nd Airborne are dropped behind US lines near Paestum as reinforcements. British hospital ship Newfoundland sunk by Luftwaffe off Salerno, Italy; 6 British nurses are killed.
It is a tragedy when soldiers are killed in war... but it is expected. I read a poem once, about a man dying on a battlefield. It said that he looked for a nurse to sooth his pains and worries, but when he couldn't find one, he gave up the fight for life. Clara Barton, Florence Nightingale, and the countless others, wether remembered or forgotten, in this profession are priceless. I could not help but feel moved when I read that sad statement, "Six British nurses were killed."
Emily, it truly is tragic. And what was worse about the Newfoundland is the hospital ship was clearly marked with the Red Cross and well-lit at night, just as she was supposed to be. There was no excuse. The only good thing is that she had just arrived, and no patients were on board.
I think that some people are just monsters, ones who have hardened their hearts toward God. It stirs up righteous indignation when things like this happen purposefully.
