CMJ PREMIERES DIRECTORS CUTOF HAPPY FANGS LION INSIDE YOU VIDEO

SELF-TITLED DEBUT OUT OCT. 1
If Bikini Kill and the Beach Boys were leveled to synth pop, it would probably sound something like Happy Fangs, San Francisco Chronicle

CMJ has premiered the official directors cut of the latest music video from San Franciscos Happy Fangs. Originally made in less than 48 hours, the video for Lion Inside You won the Best On-Screen Performance award at this years Music Video Race. The video captures the art punk duos ferocious presence, a raw attitude that reflects the sound heard on their upcoming self-titled debut, to be released on October 1st. In addition, CMJ is also offering Lion Inside You as a free audio download.

Regarding the spirit of Lion Inside You and how it reflects their style, Rebecca Bortman(vocals) says, This is our rally song to stir up the muck and the mischief down deep. We all have a fierce side and the more we swallow it down, the more vicious that lion becomes. This theme is woven through a bunch of the songs on our first EP, each one meant to be a cathartic dose of energy. At its core, Happy Fangs aims to invigorate you. We want to be your punk rock release.

The duo is rounded out by Michael Cobra (guitar/drum machine) and although both come from visual design backgrounds, musically the two come from opposite ends of the spectrum. Outside of Happy Fangs, Cobra serves as the brooding front-man of electro rock band King Loses Crown, while RGB (AKA Rebecca Gone Bad) has gained notoriety as the feisty front-woman of new-wave indie dance-punks, My First Earthquake. When the duo decided to combine forces, they decided to fore-go any defined musical blueprint and only use inspiration, spontaneity and whatever backing rhythms they could produce from a Korg Electribe drum machine.

This spirit of excitement and unpredictability extends to Happy Fangs live performances. Speaking on Bortman says, We strive to make each performance an unreproducible musical rush. We never want to play the same show twice. We come to the stage in only black & white, war-painted, and with a bundle of energy to release on our wide-eyed audiences. At every show, we ask the crowd what our newest song should be about. We write that song on the spot for them with a promise and the warning that whether the song is a total failure or the next Blitzkrieg Bop, we will never play it again. A few of these songs so good that weve debated recording them, but in the end, we are sticking to our promise."

Be sure to bring your video camera to capture the duos improvisational song when you see Happy Fangs during their upcoming national tour (the CMJ Music Marathon in New York this October). Dates to be announced shortly.
