More often than not the rich get rich and the poor get poorer. A fact of life that’s not changed much during my seventy years on this earth. What has also not changed are the five ways that poor people choose to deal with it. They roll over in despair, get on with life and play with the cards they’ve been dealt, drown their sorrows in a cocktail of drink and drugs, aspire to join the rich, or rebel.

This book is a take on how Jason Carver chooses to deal with the fact that the American Dream has morphed into a cruel nightmare and he does seem to sample most of the options before bowing to the temptations of the revolution.

Jason Carver is a flawed hero and his creator, author Nate McIntyre has employed a lot of skill to cause frustration to the reader by experiencing undesirable traits in the character they have chosen to follow. But Carver is also a dynamic character and is seen to develop throughout the story.

As with all revolutions, violence and brutality vie for authority with thought and reason and Nate McIntyre paints a very vivid picture of what could well face us all in the not too distant future.

The story revolves around a certain age group, the generation that is probably most susceptible to having their dream pulled from under them like an old tattered  rug. Because of this, one reviewer defines the relevant readership as being under thirty five. I disagree with this and would argue that all generations feel the pain and are inspired by an individual’s attempt to right a wrong.

A very enjoyable and thought provoking read that stands as a testament to the undoubted talent of the author.

SHE SHOULD HAVE COME FOR ME by Frances Gilbert

She Should Have Come For Me is a brilliant, twenty three page novella which you will find extremely difficult, if not impossible, to put down.It is exceptionally well written and is concerned with the closed door relationship between two adults and their two dogs. It is a very unusual psychological thriller that has the reader clinging to every word of the narration.

The story is narrated by one of the dogs and the manner in which the dog communicates with the reader is nothing short of sensational. The dog explores every emotion, and there are lots of them, triggered by kindness, cruelty, love, hate, jealousy, frustration, anger, tenderness, remorse, loneliness, I could go on…and on… and on. To get her points across the dog does not only call upon emotions that we all experience as humans, but also calls upon canine skills to embellish the story even further.

I cannot believe how much is packed in to so few words and this short story will live with you long after you have read it.

Without giving too much away, and spoiling this remarkably narrated story, suffice it to say that four becomes two and the two remaining lives are changed forever.
