A Perspective

On June 9th, 2013 my father-in-law succumbed to the rigors of life and passed away. He was 95 years old. He leaves behind the legacy of a good, hard working decent husband, father, and friend.
Like many men and some women his age Joseph Illardo was a veteran of WWII. It struck me that there are but few of his kind left in this world. Thinking of all the countries that sent young men off to that war, (from both sides) it makes me wonder what has war really accomplished?
While it's true that tyrants must be dealt with, a host of new technology emerges from conflict, but the battle itself never goes away.
I have a cousin who served in Korea. I myself served in Vietnam, there was Iraq and now Afghanistan. There were some other military actions along the way and it appears we are lifetimes away from any hint a peace in the Mideast. Looking back into history it is marked by wars and the time stamp of battles between men. The big picture seems to be that while we've gotten better in the act of killing, we've gotten nowhere in the why we do it. It all comes down to imposing a "will" on others.
I can't help but notice that many of these conflicts center around religious beliefs as they were hundreds of years ago. Back to that imposing "will" thing. Is this because we all believe in this supreme being we call God? Although this God is called by different names it's still the same God. A we ultimately fighting over a name? And these God's are all "peaceful" that's the weird part.
Now I know there are other reasons for many of the wars being fought, such as resources, but in the end we all must share the planet and it's resources. We have seen through modern technology that what we do effects the planet, not just a nation.
In conclusion, it seems as we progress in our ability to improve the quality of life, we are still destined to fail at it. Until we can stop killing each other we have really come no further than the cave dwellers who first began scratching pictures on walls.
To Joseph Illardo, I thank you for time here on earth. You endeavored to make it a better place. You succeeded by bringing you daughter Suzanne into this world and raising her to be the wonderful person she is today. Thank you for giving me her hand in marriage. As you now proceed into the cosmic journey I bid you the peace you have now found. We shall all join you soon.
